Doesn't your system still run cron? Something seems to be updating my /var/spool/cron/lastrun/FILES with correct timestamps. Seems like my tmp files are being removed in line with parameters set in /etc/sysconfig/cron... Is yours disabled? Maybe having cron do the task isn't the worst idea?
