Rather than convert, visit http://software.opensuse.org/search - look for Thunderbird there (MozillaThunderbird is what you'll find it listed under) and install from the RPM there. Installing from a tarball (bz2 or gz) means that it won't be tracked in the RPM database; converting from a tarball to RPM means that dependencies won't be set up properly. Installing a pre-built RPM is your best option.
