I solved the problem loking at the TeX FAQ at http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=newlang Mainly after decommenting the italian language in language.dat you won't run texhash, but texconfig. You can also leave language.dat as is and type texconfig hyphen latex The configuration program will start showing you the language.dat file, which you can edit now uncommenting the required lines. After having saved the file the program will automagically rebuild all the latex formats allowing you for the desidered hyphenation patterns. Alberto On Tue, 26 Apr 2005, Alberto Vecchiato wrote:
Hi, I have a latex document written in italian but I am not able to get the italian hyphenation work.
Here is the preamble. -------------- \documentclass{oatorep} \usepackage[italian]{babel} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{marvosym} \usepackage[amssymb,italian]{SIunits} \usepackage{graphicx} \usepackage{makeidx} ..... ------------- As you can see, I'm using the babel package with the italian option, but I get the following warning when I try to compile the document:
Package babel Warning: No hyphenation patterns were loaded for (babel) the language `Italian' (babel) I will use the patterns loaded for \language=0 instead.
I already uncommented the line of the italian language in the file /etc/texmf/language.dat, and done a texhash; the file ithyph.tex is in the directory /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/hyphen/, but still it is not working. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

PS: just in case, this is not a problem of the oatorep document class I am using, since I have the same problem with a test document using article.cls.
