Sometimes (just after turning on my computer) when I try to use xmms to hear some mp3s I got that the program is unable to load the plug-in and that I should check if there was an appropriate plug in installed and bla bla.. Result: I can not hear anything. It doesn't matter what I try on this session I got this error. Most of the times after login in/out everything works fine again. Has anyone experienced this? What is the reason? or how can I diagnose this strange problem?

Felipe, Are you using a motherboard with built in sound/audio? If so, that is part of the problem. The built-in audio does not seem to be able to handle more than one source at time with xmms. I think I am describing that correctly. I have noticed it also with the built in sound AC97 stuff. The best cure, get yourself an inexpensive sound card. You will be happier, your computer will be happy.
No, the best cure is to use arts (Contrary to what Bandipat posted in the message before this one). Arts with the xmms-arts plugin (which suse 8.2 and greater installs automatically) allows you to multiplex older inexpensive sound cards and EVERYTHING works at the same time. Running away from a software sound multiplexer is not the answer. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
