I am trying to help someone in my town to set up printer sharing with his linux box, and so far we have failed miserably... Perhaps someone can give some insight as to where I may be going wrong?
The setup is as follows: - two-system network, one winXP-home SP1, one SuSE linux 9.1 -- linux box using a D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 ethernet card. Set up by YaST. Using DHCP to determine an IP. File and printer sharing enabled within WORKGROUP through samba, using a NetBIOS name of "linux" -- windows box using an integrated ethernet card with VIA Rhine II chipset. Named "windows" on domain WORKGROUP. - ethernet cable connects the two computers directly (eg. no hub) - _only_ LAN over ethernet - connect to a dial-up ISP separately on each machine - printer is an Epson Stylus C84, connected by par-port
Both systems can print fine locally (SuSE uses Gimp-Print/foomatic).
I first tried connecting the printer to the windows box, and enabled sharing in the printer's properties dialogue. However, we weren't able to connect from the linux end. Windows was asking for a password, but there was only one account set up (the administrator), and it didn't have a password! Simply pressing enter at the password prompt did not work. I tried creating another administrator account with a password, but it didn't accept that password either. To verify that it was a problem on the windows end, I tried connecting my mac laptop to the network and accessing the windows box from there. Still no luck. At this point I also noticed that file-sharing did not appear to be working properly either - the windows system appeared on the network, but it wasn't sharing any of the files it was supposed to.
Next I tried connecting the printer to the linux system. This worked even less.. I couldn't even get the linux host to show up on the network, let alone allow access to the printer service!
Any suggestions/links you could provide would be much appreciated. I've mucked through quite a few samba howto's at this point, but none of it seems to help. The SuSE documentation wasn't too forthcoming either - it's all full of networking theory, and doesn't seem to give any really useful directions besides "use YaST" :(
smb.conf is attached. let me know if you need anything else.

Beyond saying that I notice there has just been a Samba update for 9.1 and that it might be worth trying, can't help much more, I fear. Did you set up an account matching that on the Windows box on the linux box with smbpasswd? Can you ping either from either? If the Windows host is asking for a password I suppose that's a helpful sign ... BTW smbd and nmbd both produce logs, they might be worth consulting if you haven't already as they can tell you at what point things are failing. You can adjust their debug level if I remember correctly, but don't have the resources on hand to tell you exactly how.
