The latest update of the nvidia-gfxG02 driver from the NVIDIA Repository crashes X on my ThinkPad R61 with a Quadro M series graphics card. This is a known issue and was fixed in 185.18.36: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_185.18.36.html
Same for T61... How to solve this problem? By installing older version? How to do that with zypper (do not have X anymore...).
On 11.1 you can use the failsafe entry from the boot menu to get X working again in order to download and install the new driver. If you install the driver manually, make sure to remove the packages first, having both is likely to cause trouble. You can do that with zypper se nvidia, to find the packages installed and zypper rm packagenames to remove them. Another option if your internet is up would be to do wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/185.18.36/NVIDIA-Linux- x86-185.18.36-pkg1.run or wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/185.18.36/NVIDIA- Linux-x86_64-185.18.36-pkg2.run init 3 and sh ./NVIDIA... to install it. init 5 starts X again.
