It's not clear for me which driver is used actually.
To tell what driver is in use by Xorg, look in Xorg.0.log for lines with the driver name repeated many many times in succession. The log previously attached has this NV(0): on 279 lines. If Nvidia was in use it would have NVIDIA(0):. If Nouveau was in use, it would have NOUVEAU(0):.
I guess it can't be nouveaus as it is not installed, so it has to be xorg nv driver which is installed. That is, what is reported by lsmod is not correct. Is this the case?
Lsmod is reporting the kernel driver, but your nomodeset on cmdline disables it for use by Xorg.
Uninstallation of proprietary drivers is incomplete.
I understand this.
Xorg.0.log reports using user-mode NV driver instead of NOUVEAU driver, which happens because proprietary driver uninstallation failed to remove nomodeset from kernel cmdline in your Grub stanza.
I don't understand this one. Really, I forgot to remove nomodeset option from menu.lst. But I had this options with nvidia driver as well?
Nvidia driver requires KMS be disabled. So does the nv driver. Disabling KMS is what nomodeset on cmdline does. With nomodeset on cmdline, Xorg uses either nvidia driver or nv driver. Without nomodeset on cmdline, Xorg will use nouveau if it is installed, otherwise FBDEV or VESA, both of which are slow and short on features.
even though nouveau is integral to kernel modesetting.
What does this mean? What about nvidia driver?
Kernel modesetting (KMS) is modern gfxchip support. Nvidia's driver is not supported by it. Intel, ATI and Nouveau drivers all use KMS; they all require it.
So, with nomodeset removed from cmdline, Xorg should fall back to using the much slower generic FBDEV X driver until xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveau is installed.
I don't unserstand this. If nouveau is not installed it cannot be used, fall bask has to occur anyway, not? Is the FBDEV X driver the same as xorg nv driver?
NV and FBDEV are not the same. FBDEV is generic. NV is specific to Nvidia gfxchips used without KMS enabled. Long long long ago, NV was the preferred driver for Nvidia gfxchips. Now it's only a fallback used if the proprietary driver isn't installed or won't function with a KMS disabled kernel.
I will try to install nvidia manually
I only use FOSS drivers. My Nvidia driver experience is limited mostly to getting rid of it.
but first I have to find out how to switch off xorg.
