It would be nice if you had quoted that mail, together with the timestamp, so everybody would be able to find the originating mail.
I think we (including those of us not contributing to the pertinent threads initiated by Ben) finally inferred it from the feedback given in response to attempts to help him get the compilers installed, itself done in response to some output from a "configure" script that gave up when it could not compiler a C++ program.

Harsh, and probably not literally true, but "caveat emptor" is a lesson that, at any given time, not every one out there has yet learned.
