[opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). [SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. No Login, no Graphics after update to Tumbleweed 20230211-0

Hello, after the update the screen only shows a '-'. All the usual other tty screens that you get with e.g. STRG-ALT-F1 are also gone. I can connect to the PC via ssh from my Ubuntu Laptop and check what is going on. I am using an old GTX 570 on that PC. Previously when the G06 stuff was installed instead of updating the needed G04 stuff, I was able to install NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-390.157.run manually and the login and XFCE worked. But now even that fails. :-( Any pointers? Is that the beginning of the things that are named in Subject "Nvidia 390x driver users - glibc 2.37 will bring bad news" ? Creating a new user for a deamon

Copy and Paste does not work while installing programs

Hello all! I have four machines here, all with openSUSE Leap 15.4. With three of them there are no particular problems, but with the one I am using now there is a consistent, reproducible error: When I am installing a number of programs, I normally copy my password when installing the first in the row. Then, it is easy to paste in the same password for each successive installation. However, with this machine that is impossible. I copy the password, but after I have exited the dialog box the copied password is erased from memory and I have to type the password each time when doing the subsequent installations. Further; as long as I have the dialog box open the password copied is kept in memory and can be pasted into a document I made to test this, but when I close the dialog box in order to go to Yast2 the password is evidently erased since it then cannot be pasted into the document. It is gone, but on my other machines it is kept in memory and can be pasted into the dialog box. See the attached screen shot; that is where it happens. What configuration error have I inadvertently made, since the password is not kept in memory on this one machine? Sincerely, Per Inge Oestmoen, Norway

keyboard becomes extremely slow

Hi *, for some time now I have a problem with the keyboard on my notebook. It becomes extremely slow, i.e. only one or two keypresses are shown every 10 seconds. Special keyboard shortcuts like Alt-F4 or Ctrl-F5 are working as expected. Switching to a Linux console with Ctrl-Alt-[0-9] is still working, too. In the Linux console typing works without any problems then. Switching back to KDE again/still shows the problem. The only "solution" I found is to logout and login. For a while the keyboard then works as expected, until the same problem reoccurs. The intervals the problem shows up vary between once an evening to every 10 minutes. It happens in all programs one can type anything, i.e. OO Writer, graphical terminals or even dialog boxes of any kind. It happens with the internal notebook keyboard and also with an external USB keyboard. [oS-EN] Question on full disk encription

Hi, new laptop here, and I decided to install Leap 15.4 with full disk encryption, no LVM (a feature I wanted to have for years, so I'm happy). It asks for the password twice (contrary to my customs, I'm using plymouth). It asks once before grub loads. Well, ok, there is no separate /boot, so it has to read "/" which is encrypted. Nice. But after selecting the boot entry in grub, it asks again. Once, despite being 3 partitions ("/", "/boot" and swap). Ok. Is there some way to make it ask only once? Just a shout-out to the SUSE/openSUSE devs for making 15.5 and a future 15.6 a reality. SUSE, then openSUSE, now something in between has always put out solid releases that provide user-choice to the greatest extent possible. User-choice has always been the corner-stone of Linux. While microOS Aeon and Kalpa may make sense for enterprise, it to a large extent eliminates user-choice in favor of the immutable OS craze of loop-mounted everything. A traditional release preserves the hard won community that openSUSE enjoys and 15.6 will just ensure that continues into the future. Good job devs! -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Hello, I try to use rsunc to make two folders in sync, one on local computer, the other on remote one. IN OpenSuse 15.2 I need to umount the / partition but I am getting device busy errors which block umount. Its Ext4 so I should be able to fsck this problem once unmounted. Then I can finish backing up the /home and proceed to upgrade to 15.5. How do I correct this device busy problem? The system crashed and shut off during a Firefox secession I think I had too many tabs open. CWSIV

Sometimes wonderful things happen and I want to share this with you. User gumb hinted me on this list to showimage as the successor of the abandoned kuickshow, that I urgently need for my daily work. But showimage lacked a feature I need [resizing window without zooming image]. gump provided me the email address of the developper, Martin Koller. Last Sunday I wrote an email to Martin describing my problem. Tuesday he sent me an executable with a new version and asked me to test it! Already this version did what I needed. I sent my report and added some suggestions of features he'd maybe liked to add for future releases. The same evening I received a new version that included those additional features (settings to turn off hover-menu, change background color; change brightness/contrast/gamma). Now I have a perfect showimage that is even better than kuickshow was (it also can display RAW files, Filename is showed better [at the beginning of the title, so it remains readable in small windows], mouse wheel can be used for zooming, all windows can be closed with one click/shortcut, brightness/contrast/gamma-changes can be undone...) Honestly I didn't expect such a fast and perfect solution for my problem and I know that even in open-source one cannot expect this. But it shows how helpful this mailing list often is, and that in the linux world things can happen that are absolutely unthinkable in Win/Mac surroundings. Leap and Tumbleweed TLP scheme?

All, Devs, Was surprised yesterday to find that TLP was happily running on my laptop (with tlp frequency-info) while the service was not enabled. I stumbled upon it after pulling power to my laptop and happening to see the log messages telling me I need to enable it to have it available on boot and my needing to mask systemd-rfkill.service and systemd-rfkill.socket. I'm not complaining, it's a good command line tool for power management, but didn't know how Leap was starting it since the service wasn't enabled. Anybody have the Cliff's Notes version of how this works? (I happily enable it and masked rfkill) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

as always: Kuickshow for 15.5?

On my Desktop I still run 15.3, I'd like to update to 15.5 What hinders me is that there is no Kuickshow for OS 15.5. It is an essential program for me... Had the same problem when installing 15.3, but after mailing to this list, there magically appeared a package for 15.3. Will I have the same luck this time? Do you know who I can ask, or is the miracle-maker on this list? ----- [just my story why I need it:] I know that there are other programs to show photos. But there is none as practical and fast for my use like Kuickshow, actually the others are quite unusable for my purpose: To select the photos to edit from a session, where I always have many similar ones, I open 10, 20, 30 jpegs with Kuickshow. I can do that from within digikam or dolphin. They automatically show in the largest possible size of the screen, each in a separate window. They have only a title line, no menu line, nothing fancy. With simple keyboard commands I can change the image size or turn them and the window adapts to the new size automatically. If the image is larger than the window I can simply move it moving the clicked mouse in the window without using scroll bars. I can move the windows around and put them side by side to compare. All other programs use a lot of screen space for themselves and are much slower. None changes window size when showing the image smaller or larger. None opens the images in the largest possible size of the screen. Most want me to click in a thumbnails list (that takes a lot of space and must be moved using a scrollbar) to change the foreground image. It is an important part of my workflow, I use it every day. Hi, In an old text file, which "file" says it is utf-8 text, there are some chars which are not. Some were obviously accented letters, like "á", so I just did a search and replace on them. What file or setting holds default browser info now?

All, After installing opera and brave, both installed at the default browser. Easy enough to fix with Firefox->Settings->Set as default, but that prompted a question -- where is that information stored? How do browsers know where to look -- and where is that? Good, I like that, it was about time :-) Just one "but": the text should be monospaced, because otherwise it doesn't align. I'm thinking specifically of "SUSE-SU-2023:2243-2: important: Security update for ucode-intel". why did eth0 suddenly stop working?

I have some cameras connected with eth-cables to a switch and from there to a computer (OS 15.5, using zoneminder for the cameras). It works. But this morning I saw that tonight the connection to the cameras was lost. I could ping the switch, but not the cameras. "arp -a" showed the IP's of the cameras but with "[IP] at incomplete ...". I checked all cables. I rebooted. I switched off/on electricity for computer/switch/cameras. I unplugged the switch's cable to the computer and plugged it again. No change. I plugged the eth cable to my laptop (that I used before for this task, using OS 15.3) and all connections worked... Plugged back the eth cable to the computer - and the connections work again, all cameras pingable and visible. Magic. There are no messages in var/log, only the zoneminder-log said "no connection to..." I am getting from time to time the block of the application with the following error message: Non è stato trovato un dispositivo con impostazioni valide o i permessi di accesso sono errati. Controlla la finestra Configura televisione. In plain English that is: a device with suitable settings was not found or the access permissions are erroneous. Pleas check within the menu "configure television". When you check there all is normal. Closing the app, restarting it, solves it immediately. I am curious if someone might have an idea were the problem comes from.

How to setup my network?

Hello OpenSuSE, I have been trying/experimenting with setting up my SOHO network of about 5 computers, most of which are running OpenSuSE 15.4 x64, and one (my main gateway computer to the internet) running OpenSuSE 15.3 x64. All systems are using the Plasma/KDE desktop. My main gateway computer is called "quasar" and the other systems have names such as "bigbang", "nova", etc... My network is split into 2 halves, 192.168.10.0/25 is my "internal" zone, and 192.168.10.128/25 is my "dmz" zone. Except for "quasar" each computer has 2 NIC's, one for each of my zones. Addresses and default routes are assigned by a dhcpd server, and that much is working fine (AFAIK) at the moment. "Quasar" has 3 NIC's, one of which is for my "external" zone, and the other two are for my "internal" and "dmz" zones respectively. The "internal" zone NIC is given a static IP address of 192.168.10.100 and the "dmz" zone NIC is given a static IP address of 192.168.10.200. My "external" zone NIC has been assigned 5 different public IP4 addresses, all statically assigned by using the YaST2->Network Card Setup to assign one of these public IP4 addresses to the NIC card itself, and the other 4 public IP4 addresses are assigned to this same "external" NIC card as additional addresses for that "external" NIC card. What I want to accomplish is to set up the routing so that any incoming traffic to one of these external additional IP4 addresses, on a port, gets routed from "quasar" to one of my other computers on the DMZ side of my network on the same port number. So for example, lets say there is incoming traffic whose destination is 111.111.111.112:10. I want this to be routed/forwarded to my internal computer called "Nova" at it's DMZ address of say 192.168.10.210:10 and I don't want to specify a rule for each and every port number specifically. Different computers will have different services listening on different ports. How do I accomplish this? So far I have tried lots of combinations of setting up rich and direct rules in firewalld, using firewalld's port forwarding rules, using the route tables in Yast2 -> Network Setup, and trying to write iptables rules directly. I have turned on masquerading of course or used nat/dnat rules in iptables. This seems like it should be fairly straight-forward, but I have found no joy getting this to work. (and have spent many days trying to grok a solution) I would sure appreciate it if any guru here could show me how to accomplish this wretched task before I pull all my hair out! One caveat, it would be extremely difficult for me to run extra cables and I really really want to accomplish this virtually with only software configuration solutions. run kcminit when mouse connects

Hi *, there are known bugs, that for a mouse, that is unplugged and plugged in again, settings are not always properly set as configured. Running /usr/bin/kcminit /usr/lib64/qt5/plugins/plasma/kcminit/kcm_mouse_init.so solves this problem. Does anyone know, where/how this would happen automatically without those known bugs? Is there any other way to run the command mentioned above as soon as a mouse conntects? For the moment I have created a shortcut, but this is annoying in case of a KVM switch. TIA. Bye. Michael.

I have decided I will follow the group's consensus and put a switch on my external internet cable and directly route to all my systems, each with their own public IP address. It's too bad firewalld can't handle the routing, as I had hoped, but I can live with this solution as well. So for now lets call this question resolved and move on, thanks again... Marc...

Devs, Not sure if SUSE has any interest in bcachefs following the massive commitment of resources to BTRFS, but it seems bcachefs needs additional resources to get over the finish line. I have no burning desire for a new FS, ext4 is just fine, but it does look interesting. I don't know if this is something the powers-that-be want to look at? It looks like it will not make the 6.5 kernel, but that is largely due to merge request issues/dependencies and it seems quite lacking on development resources. Relevant part of LKML thread https://lkml.org/lkml/2023/7/6/865 Not sure if the FS folks here have any interest in bcachefs, but it was interesting enough to pass on and see. I hadn't seen bcachefs before the dust-up on LKML, but having watched BTRFS mature with SUSE's help, this may provide another unique opportunity to steer the development of a new FS if it provides any significant benefit over BTRFS. -- David C. Using a openSuse 15.4 packaged version of postfix and dovecot. Having authentication issues following the cookbook steps provide by dovecot and postfix docs. I find, checking for the "as compiled" authentication methods: ~ # postconf -a cyrus dovecot ~ # postconf -A cyrus Which tells me, I think, that attempting to use lmpt for communication between dovecot and postfix (on same box) are doomed. Have I a clue?

Copy and Paste does not work while installing programs

Hello all! I have four machines here, all with openSUSE Leap 15.4. With three of them there are no particular problems, but with the one I am using now there is a consistent, reproducible error: When I am installing a number of programs, I normally copy my password when installing the first in the row. Then, it is easy to paste in the same password for each successive installation. However, with this machine that is impossible. I copy the password, but after I have exited the dialog box the copied password is erased from memory and I have to type the password each time when doing the subsequent installations. Further; as long as I have the dialog box open the password copied is kept in memory and can be pasted into a document I made to test this, but when I close the dialog box in order to go to Yast2 the password is evidently erased since it then cannot be pasted into the document. It is gone, but on my other machines it is kept in memory and can be pasted into the dialog box. See the picture in the link below; that is where it happens. Both Firefox & Thunderbird stopped working thing morning. I was using both all morning, but neither work now. I noticed there were 2 updates just before this happened. This affects both my desktop and notebook computers. Rebooting does not help. sddm 2.0 and dropped MinimumVT option

Hi *, with sddm 2.0 the MinimumVT option has been dropped, causing sddm to use the lowest available vt to run X. Is there anything one can do to get back that behaviour besides compiling sddm? TIA. Bye. Michael.

While doing preliminary work to retiring a legacy proprietary email system, my own, looking at maybe setting up an IMAP server, just for the fun of it. On a fresh openSuse 15.4 I see none installed by default and when I go sniffing about in YAST, i find several flavors available for install: dovecot dovecot23 imap (and sundry) Funny I was just ready about 3 body problems . . .

Compiler Errors: compiling a Python 3.9 Project on Leap 15.5. Is it possible?

Hi, i am trying to compile a Python 3.9 Project on Leap 15.5. I try to compile Bubblejail (https://github.com/igo95862/bubblejail) which is a Python 3.9 Project. The main Python version in "usr/bin/Python" ist Python 3.6. In the Repos there is also 'python39' which installs Python 3.9 in "/usr/bin/Python3.9". For some reason i cant compile Bubblejail with Python 3.9. The compiler always fails. trying to fall back to Python 3.6 Even when i start the compiler with "/usr/bin/python3.9 /usr/bin/meson compile" it still tries to compile with Python 3.6. All, On a couple of zypper refresh attempts lately, I receive: Problem retrieving files from 'nvidia'. Download (curl) error for 'https://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/leap/15.4/repodata/repomd.xml': Error code: Curl error 92 Error message: HTTP/2 stream 5 was not closed cleanly: PROTOCOL_ERROR (err 1) History: - Giving up after 3 attempts.
