[opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. SuSE Tumbleweed with newest updates and upgrades. 5.7.1-1-default #1 SMP Wed Jun 10 11:53:46 UTC 2020 (6a549f6) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Just recently started to give error messages when plugging in e.g. USB Headsets, Arduino Uno into some Exsys USB 3.0 hub. This was working fine in Tumbleweed before and in e.g. SuSE 13.1. Audio problem Leap-15.3

How to connect via WiFi

My new computer is an HP 15s-eq2147 FHD RYZ5-5 16GB 512 SSD DOS It has no cable connection to the internet, but only access via WiFi. Installing Leap 15.3 was no problem, but so far I did not manage to establish a WiFi connection. Using Yast, I set up a wicked service with fixed address, getting this list: Device Name: wlan0 Configured with address 192.168.2.16/24 (acer.ariannuccia.zz) Starting automatically on cable connection I find it somewhat absurd that a cable connection is required even for WiFi. Since I have no cable connection, I am looking for a work around. Any idea? The "Authentication Mode" offers these 5 options: No Encryption WEP - Open WEP - Shared Key WPA-EAP ("enterprise") WPA-PSK ("home") On my router (192.168.2.1) there are these "Encryption type": Unencrypted (not recommended) WPA2 (very secure) WPA / WPA2 (secure) WPA (secure) For avoiding problems with the correspondence of these methods, I have selected "No Encryption" on my computer and "Unencrypted (not recommended)" on my router. But the connection does not work. Any attempt to ping the router from the new computer is rejected with the reply: connect: Network is unreachable Any help would be welcome. I have been beating my head against smartctl for over two hours now. I cannot seem to get the command "long" accepted, as the various tutorials explain. You have provided 2 device names: long /dev/nvme0n1 (It doesn't like "short" either.) And my typing is getting worse! It doesn't help that my drive is called /dev/nvme0n1. As I mentioned earlier, the lightning strike has damaged something in this, my main computer, and I'm trying to find out what. For those who missed the earlier post, the only thing I can connect to here is the internet. I cannot see the printers or the laptop machine, and nmap basically doesn't work. I started this quest at 11:30 PM and it's now 3:30 AM. I'm going to bed! --doug

[opensuse] Kernel compilation the openSUSE way?

I usually take the newest openSUSE kernel (from repository Kernel_stable). But since some month I have a DVB T2 HD card, which requires a patch (see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194171). So I need to compile kernels myself. I have a working compilation path. But the current path has 12 steps! It takes some time. I wonder, why it is so complicated to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE. Is there a better/easier/automated way to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE? I know this blog article. But the article uses Vanilla kernels and also needs 6 steps. With additional patches (4 steps), third-party modules (2 steps) and cleanup (1 step) the article would also need 13 steps: Compiling the Linux Kernel, the SUSE way https://www.suse.com/communities/blog/compiling-de-linux-kernel-suse-way/ This is my Kernel configuration, compilation and installation path: 1. Problem with software raid and Tumbleweed

Hello, I got Tumbleweed Snapshot20210115 and wanted to install it on a rather old machine with a software raid1 (UEFI raid). On this raid some Windows 10 is already existing. The installer of Tumbleweed Snapshot20210115 does not recognize this software raid1. It only shows single harddiscs and no raid volume. An older snapshot 20190704 is able to see that software raid1 but I cannot do any zypper dup with that one (this version was running previously before some hardware crash). Any help for that - either a snapshot which can handle software raid1 or some way to set zypper dup running again with the older snapshot? BR and thanks in advance Markus

After the lightning bolixed up all the computers, I bought a cheap refurb that had Windows10 Home on it. I decided to make a partition for OpenSUSE Leap 15.3. I used gparted to shrink windows and make a partition for Leap 15.3. I downloaded the latest version and installed it. It seems to have wiped out Windows and created for itself something that must be related to hell. Most of the apps that I could download and install on a version from last Fall are gone and unfindable, When I placed the few that I could find on the desktop, when I rebooted they were gone. So was Windows.The only thing I could do that remained was to get rid of the ugly stock desktop and replace it with something pleasant. I have used Linux for almost 20 years, and I really don't understand Windows, on a partially working machine, or want to, but I'm having to use it until I find a new Linux. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? It's like KDE is GONE! The folks here on the mailing lists have been more than helpful to me, and I am grateful to them, but now I will have to find something--probably Mint with a KDE overlay--that I can live with. I will really miss the root version of Dolphin. Written from a badly damaged Windows computer (that has a usable Leap 15 on it) but still reads and sends mail on an ugly app from optimum.net. (Claws mail I never got to work.) --doug

KDE3 ARK displaying messed up timestamp for files in ZIP archive.

Unzip, some years ago, when listing files in an archive, showed the timestamp for those files in the format of MM-DD-YY. Now, unzip, when listing files in an archive, shows the timestamp for those files in the format of YYYY-MM-DD. This change in how unzip shows timestamps has caused KDE3 ARK to show a messed up timestamp when viewing a ZIP archive. Are there any plans to fix this? Has this already been fixed in some version of kdeutils3-*x86_64.rpm that I haven't been able to find, even though I've checked many kdeutils3-*x86_64.rpm packages going up to opensuse 15.3? Alternatively, since one fix is simply adding statements to the C source for ARK to convert unzip's new timestamp of YYYY-MM-DD to the old format of MM-DD-YY before letting the rest of ARK's C source process that, but also keeping in mind that I have no clue where to find that C source code for ARK since I've had zero involvement in any KDE3 development and therefore have no familiarity with how anything is structured or what the labels mean, could someone point me to the exact C source for ARK where it processes the unzip timestamps, so that I can fix ARK myself.

old HP printer

With great difficulty, I think I've found one or more ppd files for an HP Laser 2200D. They're all for various old versions of Windows. Will any of them work in Leap? Trying to get some kind of printer going until I recover from the lightning strike, and I'm pretty sure this boat anchor still works. One example is this: LaserJet USB (DOT4) communication driver for HP LaserJet 2200d This driver only solution provides DOT4 USB bi-directional communication functionality on Windows 8 and higher operating systems. lastlog permissions

Hello List, for quite some time, I've noticed that the permissions and group of /var/log/lastlog (and sometimes a few others, like [bw]tmp) differ from what chkstat expects. This is, of course, easily fixed with chmod and chown, but the old permissions tend to re-appear after zypper updates. Trouble with the touchpad while typing

Hi, I have Trouble with the touchpad while I type, almost since ever, currently with XFCE in Leap 15.2. The touchpad activates randomly, apparently touched by my hand and destroys what I typed. I have in settings "Disable touch pad while typing" set to 2 seconds. Type "SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad". Edge scrolling. This is supposed to impede the trouble I have, but it does not. If I type and I try to move the mouse pointer it doesn't respond till two seconds have passed, which is a nuisance I would accept if it worked. There are two types of incidents. One, the cursor location suddenly moves several paragraphs up in the middle of typing a word, thus within centiseconds. Certainly inside the 2 seconds protection. Two, a large portion of the text I'm typing suddenly gets selected, again in the middle of typing a word (I type fast), so that on the next letter I type the entire highlight gets replaced with that next letter, erasing at times all my work. In the first case, I can select the offending text and move it to the correct location, or hit undo. In the second case, I have to use undo, so I don't actually lose my work. Almost always it happens inside Thunderbird. At least, i don't remember it happening in other apps. Evergreen, where has the Long Term Support gone...

Good morning, So, question. We use to have Evergreen which was going to be our LTS version, so that when a distro reached the magical .3 in the release, we could switch to Evergreen. I haven't seen anything on it in while, has Evergreen stopped? Do we not have any LTS version? I am switching a lot of systems from openSUSE 42.3 to 15.3, and I am saddened by the number of software packages that seem to have been removed. One of the reasons I started using SuSE back in the day was, it had the most packages, which was awesome. Here is an example, Nginx has a log of module packages that are no longer there. Oh, please don't tell me to go too software.opensuse.org, is great only if people keep their software up-to-date. urgent: how to write to reiserfs on 15.3?

Hi, all my encrypted external disks are with reiserfs. No I want to read/write to one of them on my new pad and it says "unkonwn filesystem type 'reiserfs'. What do I have to install so that 15.3 remembers the forgotten system? I installed reiserfs-kmp-default and libreiser4-1_2-1 and libaal-1_0-7 it can read the disks but not write to them. Hello, I just buy a 4k screen. Now my most usual setup is 27" 4k left, full HD (laptop) center and full hd right. The new screen should be used only for video editing, not always. But my usual setup is completely changed by the new screen: even the cursor size is changed (much bigger). I use the "supplementary action" from kde to open my main applications on the desktop I want (I have 10 of them), but fail to find a way to have all my applications open in the "main" screen (as setup in the kde panel), because the x coordinate changes any hint? thanks NB: I still use 15.1, for some reason I can't make my system works as expected in 15.3 jdd -- http://dodin.org

Hi, Steam is asking for python3-apt. The only package I see that I have is python38-wrapt. Is this the correct package. I don't know the name of the tumbleweed version, and I don't want to guess at it. Thanks, mike

2-Terabyte-Mushkin-SSD?

The largest Mushkin SSD I can purchase is 2 Terabytes. What are your thoughts on a drive that may be within my needs. If following the basic/standard COW protocol. So seriously.. it's just a "desktop computer" thinking about a brother-MFC-J485DW printer....someday..:| I do not like Crucial nor others on information (What is the nicest SSD for openSUSE TW currently?) Honestly I really do not like to support many more companies than my 85.00 USD a month internet provider now. <-You may get my drift. I am hoping to put the massive (to me) into an old HP Lenovo m-91p - Everything is fine now with the - well all of it really. Hello!, Reading the documentation, I see that I could configure opensuse machines as a FreeIPA client using the stock sssd, although the ipa-client-install command is not available. I see that yast could be used (yast2-auth-client), but I would like to know if there's a non-interactive CLI tool I could use to automate the configuration. Regards, CI.-
