Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). [SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. I usually take the newest openSUSE kernel (from repository Kernel_stable). But since some month I have a DVB T2 HD card, which requires a patch (see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194171). So I need to compile kernels myself. I have a working compilation path. But the current path has 12 steps! It takes some time. I wonder, why it is so complicated to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE. Is there a better/easier/automated way to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE? I know this blog article. But the article uses Vanilla kernels and also needs 6 steps. With additional patches (4 steps), third-party modules (2 steps) and cleanup (1 step) the article would also need 13 steps: Compiling the Linux Kernel, the SUSE way https://www.suse.com/communities/blog/compiling-de-linux-kernel-suse-way/ This is my Kernel configuration, compilation and installation path: 1. [opensuse] Raid, Raid6, what file system for good fault tolerance?

Hi list, speaking about software raid, not hardware controller based. I am trying to go for some local OpenSuse machine and adding some storage to it. Was considering Raid6, and now reading about a bit and people left and right scaremongering about the larger the disks these days in the double digit terabyte capacities even, the more likely it is that during a reconstruction of a raid subsequent errors would occur. I would absolutely like to keep my data consistent, and I am not thinking about double digit terabytes either, would stick to 2TB or 4TB disks, with Raid6 thats at least 4 physical drives. Now I am wondering if it possible to use a good robust file system that can add some more parity or check blocks or redundancy on top of the hardware disks, to absolutely be able to always read my data. I can't add multiple machines or like those high availability stuff like clusters and what not I read about DRBD (Distributed Replicated Block Device), or maybe I am just too scared by those technical terms or consider myself to be just a simpleton and wanting to keep it rather simple. My use case here is also not constant availablity, when a disk needs to be replaced, so be it, but I don't want to lose my data that I can not ever read certain parts of it again or such stuff. The thing that came to my mind was, if there is some file systems that would add redundancy and robustness onto the mdraid system of the linux kernel? Anyone with some useful insights? Roughly speaking, I was considering some simple pcie esata interfaced controller card and an external case enclosure with esata port and portmulitplier stuff inside, that can present at least 4 physical disks as JBOD, just a bunch of disks, so that the Linux can seem them all separately. Speed and rebuild times are not my concern, but data persistence and data integrity. Not even number of physical disks, I could live with even one of those 8 bay device enclosures and cases that are out there on the market. [opensuse] installing Gimp 2.10 on OS 15.1 failed (or: how to get webp for gimp?)

Hello, I need to be able to read and safe webp graphics in gimp. I am on Opensuse 15.1 and that comes with gimp 2.8 which doesn't support this format, it is (as I read) included from Gimp 2.9. I found oneclick install for Gimp 2.10 for OS 15.1. Tried it. It failed because libmypaint-1.4 cant be found. I installed without, but then Gimp doesn't start. I searched for libmypaint - found oneclick 1.5.1 - tried, but it didn't install because of an rpm error. 1.4.0 is only available for OS 15.2 (haven't tried to install it, should I - on 15.1?) my questions: - How can I install Gimp 2.10 on 15.1 and resolve the missing libmypaint-1.4? - or alternatively: how can I make Gimp 2.8 to handle webp graphics? [opensuse] Weird Wifi connection issue on Leap

Hi, On one of my systems running Leap 15.1 I have a weird issue with connecting the system to Wifi networks that I however haven't really been able to pin down precise enough to feel confident in writing a bug report. When trying to connect to a WLAN after system start the connection will fail and a pop-up will appear that asks for the WPA password. Now, no matter how often I enter the correct password in that dialog, connection will still fail. However, if I cancel the connection, wait for a couple of seconds and then press the connect button in the KDE Network Manger, the connection will succeed, using the password that had been stored for that connection all time long. Also, if I remove the configuration for the network and connection from the KDE network manger, the password will be prompted in the network selection screen, not in the pop-up window, and connection will work right away. Weirdly, I only observe this issue on one of my systems. The only thing special about that system is that I messed up when ordering it and it thus is powered by an RTL8821CE-based Wifi adapter which I use via a kernel module ported over from Endless OS [1]. However, as the connection works without issue if "manually" connecting to the network, I fail to see how the driver could be at fault here. Any idea on what I could look at to further pin down the issue? [opensuse] mkiss kernel module missing

Hi - I don't normally wander anywhere near the kernel software so please forgive my ignorance. I am running OpenSuSE Leap 15.1 (recently upgraded) on a system that I use in connection with my ham radio hobby. I am trying to get the ax.25 communication layer going over an RS232 link and the software I use is complaining that the mkiss kernel module is missing. In the past I think this was simply included in the default kernel module so I don't understand why it doesn't seem to be playing nice anymore. Has it been moved to a separate package and if so how do I find it and get it installed? YaST and other tools don't seem to have a clue... Google ain't helping either! Any help would be greatly appreciated! (and please don't simple tell me what I need to do, I am venturing into unknown territory here, so actual commands and examples, like pictures, are worth a thousand words!) [opensuse] vncviewer and displayless remote

Hi I am using vncviewer to connect to an openSUSE (42.3) system that does not have a connected display/keyboard/mouse. Generally it works very well. I access the desktop that would have been seen on the remote system if it had a display. But I would not just be posting a happy 'it's working' message (even if I think they are not a bad thing...). Now would I. The size of the local window with the desktop is whatever size the remote X thinks it's display is. When there is no display attached, it uses some default smaller size. Probably 800x600 or something like that. Is it possible to tell X what the resolution should be when no display is found? Of course I would like the discovery when a display is attached to be done. This is just when X starts without a display, or is otherwise unable to determine the display size to use. I have looked at these types of things: https://askubuntu.com/questions/453109/add-fake-display-when-no-monitor-is-… Setting it with xrandr would always override the resolution whatever any real display indicated. I want it to be when no display is detected. Hi all, I'm running wordpress on two Leap 15.1 systems, but (from the built in health check in WP 5.4): "Your site is running an older version of PHP (7.2.5) PHP is the programming language used to build and maintain WordPress. Newer versions of PHP are faster and more secure, so staying up to date will help your site’s overall performance and security. The minimum recommended version of PHP is 7.3." I can't simply add the obs phpo7 and extensions/php7 repos, since several extensions in there don't work properly right now - namely the redisd, memcached, and geoip ones. Any ideas? No, not going to build php from source locally. Hello: I have a pdf file which is A5 paper size in landscape mode. When I open it in a pdf viewer (acroread, kdpf, okular) it is shown in landscape mode. pdfinfo shows: Producer: GPL Ghostscript 9.15 CreationDate: Wed Apr 8 23:20:35 2020 ModDate: Wed Apr 8 23:20:35 2020 Tagged: no Pages: 1 Encrypted: no Page size: 596 x 421 pts (A5) File size: 43191 bytes Optimized: no PDF version: 1.5 I would like to print this file, using lp or lpr command, onto the upper half of a portrait A4 paper, that is the A5 file is placed in landscape mode on a portrait A5 paper's upper half. Whatever I try, the document is always printed A5 portrait mode on the A4 paper with the document's lower edge close to the bottom of the A4 paper. [opensuse] Set static IP adress for some domain

Dear opensuse users, I'm running the latest opensuse leap 15.1 just today I ran into a situation where I needed to point a domain to a specific IP adress. If I'm on my windows client I just update the hosts file 112.202.123.179 somedomain.com copy that file to /windows/system32/drivers/etc open a terminal and run 'ipconfig /flushdns' and voila ... whatever way I try to access the domain, e.g. do a ping or visit the domain in a web browser it points to the IP adress defined in the hosts file. How can I do this on an opensuse box? there's also a /etc/hosts file but it doesn't seem to get picked up? there's also a DNS running on the box (same like on the windows computer) but I just want this specific domain to have a specific static IP address I've already looked into /etc/hosts.conf ... /etc/resolver.conf ... /etc/nsswitch.conf ... or whatsoever ... Still without any luck at all ;) Is it really that difficult? [opensuse] Print/scan on Epson working now

Not sure what made this work, but my Epson WP4530 all-in-one is now printing and scanning. (TW.) I have done the following: Set a static IP address in the printer, to what it was under a different Linux system some time ago. 192.168.1.26 This was done thru the control panel of the printer, iaw Epson directions. Open a user console and enter xsane. (This previously said could not find scanner.) Scanner came to life and worked. Found print choice of Epson in Libre Office and used printer to print. Tried XSane from icon on desktop--worked. Shut down to power off, then restarted. Print and scan still works. Only the last line stopped working, letting me with my data in a reduced windows running the line by hand gives the same result any idea? All, This is another strange one. (slightly long message with config and logs -- but just one simple issue) I have run bind 9.9 and dhcpd with dynamic zone updates (using TSIG) for nearly 20 years (18 to be exact, and with the TSIG whenever they came along). I'm now seeing funny behavior (and this may be related to how the DHCID TXT has is calculated). What is happening is my sever hands out the IP to the client, and then searches and deletes the record for both forward and reverse zone -- and then doesn't add a forward or reverse zone so name resolution of the client getting the address fails (I see that same behavior in some Linux and some Windows hosts -- but others work fine??) -- that's a new one. (of course all this shows up After a power-outage today that exhausting the UPS so everything came down, server + ~ 25 mixed windows/Linux/phone/tablet hosts) After the server was up and running, take the recent boot of a win7 box hostname sffxe, The TSIG authorization works fine and the zone files are updated removing the IP (which if the IP changed is fine) -- but then doesn't add a new record to the forward or reverse zone. [opensuse] Network bonding - Where the documentation should be?

Hello, I'm going to set up aggregation of two network cards of single server to get better connectivity (load balancing, fault tolerance). I found SDB wiki article https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Bonding which seems pretty outdated. Shouldn't it be rather deleted as there is appropriate section in <https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/reference/html/ book.opensuse.reference/cha-network.html#sec-network-iface-bonding> ? The settings seems pretty straightforward, should be fine, I hope. :-) Does anyone have experience with this? Any possible pitfalls to be aware of? As Leap 15.1 is very similar to SLE 15 SP 1, I wonder why it's documentation <https:// documentation.suse.com/sle-ha/15-SP1/html/SLE-HA-all/cha-ha-netbonding.html> seems to be so different on first look...? [opensuse] Atavistic Gtk+ font rendering - last few days - taller/shorter?

All, Maybe my eyes are just getting old, but on the past boot after the Nvidia update (I'm not sure what else came in with it), I noticed the fonts in Gtk+ apps were rendering a pixel or two *taller* than normal. The width remained the same. It was just as if the font glyphs were stretched up enough to notice. It was most notable in apps like Tbird where you have both bold and regular fonts side-by-side like with unread/read mail subject lines in the message list window. After reboot today after a dozen or so KDE3 updates, all is back to normal. (kudos to the openSUSE devs with the continue KDE3 tweaks -- that desktop is in the best shape it has ever been -- system and desktop all fully loaded in less than 250K of RAM) Nothing like having a fully-capable desktop that just works -- no surprises :) The KDE fonts were never impacted, only the Gtk+ fonts (I didn't check, but it could have to do with the kcontrol setting of "Use my KDE fonts in Gtk applications" that may have seen a regressing in the builds over the past few days). Regardless, it is back to normal now, but it was curious enough I thought I would pass it along in case anyone else noticed the difference. I doubt it was KDE3 specific -- but may have been. -- David C. I am trying to install Java 8 from Oracle on Tumbleweed. My wife wants to update the software in her bike (seriously). I tried uninstalling the existing jre 1.8, but that did not help. I'm also curious why the jre 8 install is making a reference to jre 1.8. Tha is/was the previous one. So maybe that is where the reference comes from. I's so long since I fiddled with Java... [opensuse] Plasma5 no longer available on login

I had to restart the desktop today because of a minor problem with menus. Now, Plasma is no longer an option at login. The default session is now IceWM, which is a loathsome thing, to say the least (no offence intended to anyone who actually likes it). /usr/share/xsessions/plasma5.desktop seems to have disappeared from my system in an update on April 12 -- the last appearance of plasma5.desktop in any snapshot is dated April 7, and I have not logged out/in since the last kernel update about 23 days ago. I checked the Plasma5 packages for any occurrence of "plasma5.desktop", thinking a forced refresh would restore the file. However, that file is is not in any of these packages. [opensuse] How to Clear Local Nameserver Cache when other LAN IPs change?

All, This seems like it should be something that I know of the top of my head, but I must not. On leap 15.0 on my laptop, I had updated a few other boxes on the LAN. (over ssh) Upon reboot the IP for the host I had updated changed local server on LAN running ISC dhcpd and bind. (I'm not sure what prompted the change, but it seems like something Linux 5.6.5 related in the way the DHCID TXT string is calculated by the client based on the MAC? - that's for another day) The updated host and server were both happy with what the new IP was for the updated hosts (simple nslookup confirmed that), but my Leap 15.0 laptop still had the old IP cached somewhere (nscd?) and was unable to reconnect to the remote updated hosts after they were rebooted (I could connect with ssh -Y NEWIP just fine) So the problem was my laptop still holding the old IPs in cache somewhere. What do I restart or how can I flush the cache so my laptop has the new IP for the client so name resolution works from my laptop? (restart nscd?, some nsswitch command? -- that's where I got stuck) I don't have any other caching daemon running other than what Leap starts by default. So what is the magic utility I need? Hi all. I have a question regarding SSH options with Rsync. I have an old NAS which I want to use to rsync some very large files to. I set up a user and a folder on the NAS. I can connect easily via sftp, although I need to specify an algorithm as follows. I need to use the following command. This works great and I can transfer files fine. sftp -oKexAlgorithms=+diffie-hellman-group1-sha1 paul@nas1:/mnt/array1/backup However, I cannot work out how to specify the the diffle-hellman-group1-sha1 on the rsync command. Can anyone shed some light on this please? So far I have the following: ~$ rsync -va /data paul@nas1:/mnt/array1/backup Unable to negotiate with 192.168.0.9 port 22: no matching key exchange method found. I have an Alienware 7 that contains revision of Nvidia graphics hardware that never behaved well under 43.2. I have an old Leap 15.0 disk and I was going to try to upgrade it to the current version, which I believe to be 15.1. First I tried to perform a zypper up of the 15.0 system, but it always hangs on the question about the Nvidia License. Both yes or no responses yield no action. So I thought I would perform a zypper dup, going to 15.1, and see if anything was better. This also hangs on the question of the Nvidia license. Is there any tick to entering the response so that the operation will continue? I receive a response that there is a file in /var/tmp/TempFile.7pktXW. The the system hangs there. All, I think it was James that had a similar question, but at the time I had no context to compare it to. But I had an occurrence last night where running valgrind on a simple bit of code that allocated 4.5G causes the my box to swap. The machine was in hardlock during swap -- no mouse pointer movement, not keyboard control -- no nothing. I was contemplating a hard reset while I sat waiting... and waiting... and waiting (probably no more than 3 minutes -- but that provides a lot of time to think about whether you need to nuke it or not) I have had boxes swap hundreds and hundreds of times over the decades, but never had a box exhibit this "hard-lock" behavior before. I now valgrid sets up its own protected environment to do its work in, but I don't see why it swapping would have any worse of different impact on the system than anything else swapping (I just don't know -- but wouldn't expect it to) Is this a bug, a feature, a valgrind special environment issue? If I recall the earlier thread (there have been a couple - Why swap?, etc.. recently), James or whoever it was was seeing similar unresponsiveness during the swap. I ran into this answering a question on StackOverflow. With 8G of RAM total allocating 4.5 while you have a full desktop with a dozen or so tabs in Firefox, etc. will cause your box to swap. I'm sure many have this feature enabled, just in case. Keeping multiple kernels and module versions around. On one of my ARM systems, yesterday I ran an update "zypper patch" (Leap 15.0), which installed a new kernel 4.12.14-lp150.12.82-lpae, the old one being 4.12.14-lp150.12.48-lpae. Both initrds were rebuilt, I have two kernels, two sets of modules - but my dtb was cleared out: /boot/dtb-4.12.14-lp150.12.48/ - empty apart from one file I had renamed to .old. I use my own DTB, but this did not prevent the system from booting, instead it did stop the network from coming up (wifi device not correctly defined in the openSUSE supplied DTB). I had to climb some 10meters up a ladder to retrieve the box, disassemble it and put a serial console on it :-) Question - the multiple kernels feature ought to have retained my dtb directory contents in /boot/dtb-4.12.14-lp150.12.48/ ? I'm just trying to start using libreoffice draw. Leap 15.0 LO Version: 6.2.7.1 (yes I know it's old) The help for Arranging Objects says: "2. Choose Modify - Arrange ..." and searching the help reveals that Modify is supposedly a menu. But there is no Modify menu. Menus are: File Edit View Insert Format Page Shape Tools Window Help A quick web search hasn't shown anything helpful. Does anybody know how to fix this? [opensuse] Desktop search in KDE on Tumbleweed

I'm new to both Opensuse and KDE and I'm trying to get my head around the file content search capabilities of KDE and Baloo (running in a fresh install of Tumbleweed). Is anyone familiar with Baloo in KDE on Tumbleweed? In particular at the moment, my requirements/expectations are: (1) Dynamic indexing of new file content and changed file content. I'd expect this to be almost instant on a freshly installed system with only a few files. (2) Search of arbitrary files types from the GUI. On point (1): I've successfully set Baloo to index file contents and it can do so when forced (which I've been able to confirm using the "balooshow" command). However, Baloo doesn't seem to want to dynamically index new or changed files. For example, I create a new text file with some unique content, try to search the file contents from the KDE GUI, but the contents are not found until I issue a "balooctl check" command to force re-indexing. As far as I can see, Baloo is supposed to use a file system watcher to see file changes and re-index new/changed files dynamically but it doesn't seem to be doing it. If it is just waiting, how long do I have to wait? And can I increase its responsiveness? On point (2): Both Krunner and the search box on the KDE start menu appear to filter file types for which they return data but I can't see how to alter this. For example, I can create a text file (file.txt) and a HTML file (file.htm) in ~/Desktop, both containing the text "jabberwocky". If I then use "balooctl check" to make sure that they are both indexed, I can confirm that their contents have both been successfully indexed by using "balooshow -x file.txt" or "balooshow -x file.htm". These two commands correctly show the indexed words in the two files. If I use the "baloosearch jabberwocky" command it will correctly return the two files: "file.txt" and "file.htm". BUT, typing "jabberwocky" into either the KDE start menu's search box or Krunner will only list the text file, not the HTML file. In other words, it seems that the GUI is filtering the file types for which it interrogates the index. How can I force it to search for all file types unless I explicitly choose to filter them? I've not yet tested beyond text and HTML files types. If anyone can help me with this or point me to somewhere else to ask, I'd be really grateful. For what it's worth, my use case for this is as follows: I have a large collection (about 1.5 million files) of various document file types, including text, HTML, MHTML, PDF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, and various others, as well as some image file types that have embedded metadata (e.g. description text or tags). I currently use a different desktop search system to index and search these files and metadata and I'd like to migrate to Baloo under KDE. In principle, I know that Baloo can do all this but the details (e.g. dynamic index update) and GUI integration don't seem to be quite as transparent or smooth as I'd have expected. The desktop search system I currently use is Windows Search on Windows 10: It is extremely fast in both indexing (virtually instant for new/changed files with no noticeable effect on system speed) and search. Also the GUI integration is outstanding (available from the start menu and all file manager windows). However, I'd rather move from Windows to Linux. As I mentioned, I know that Baloo is capable of file content indexing/searching (and I think metadata too) but the actual implementation in KDE (at least as implemented on Tumbleweed) does seem to be lacking in smoothness, for want of a better word. All, After updating a box to the 5.6.3 kernel, I decided to update FF from 60.8esr to 68.6esr. (yes, I know 68.7esr is out, one release back was intentional) As with any new version jump in FF, it took about 45 minutes to chase down and disable all the crapola I don't want or need. Hopefully this will save someone else the 45 minutes. This isn't new version related, but I don't want search suggestion cluttering up my search results, so set the following to `false` in about:config browser.search.suggest.enabled browser.urlbar.suggest.openpage I can't stand ads or other junk cluttering up the addons page trying to tell me what they think are good addons. If I need a feature, I'm smart enough to search for it myself. about:config set to `false` extensions.htmlaboutaddons.discover.enabled extensions.htmlaboutaddons.recommendations.enabled I don't want an mozilla firefox account and I don't want a dopey smiley face on my toolbar. about:config set to `false` identity.fxaccounts.enabled identity.fxaccounts.toolbar.enabled I do not want software that attempts to download and install a new version of itself and I don't need a 50M download waiting to be installed. Nor do I want a green up-arrow over the hamburger as a nag reminder. Only now, mozilla has taken away the ability to use about:config to disable automatic download of updates and mozilla took away the setting in preferences where you could tell firefox not to check for updates (annoying) Now you have to hack together a json file of policies which for 68.6 requires you create a 'distribution' directory in the firefox install location, e.g. for a mozilla tarball that is: /opt/firefox/distribution/policies.json (I'm not sure where that would be for the rpm -- Wolfgang?) The contents to disable updates and the green nag is: { "policies": { "AppAutoUpdate": false } } (which of course will need to be wrapped in the policies-template for 68.7...) Hi Folks, I have a question about zypper or libzypp. I found out that on SLES 15 SP1 the package openswan has been updated from 5.6.0 to 5.8.2 via patch:SUSE-SLE-Module-Basesystem-15-SP1-2020-743-1. That's bad because the update breaks my connection via IPsec to SAP. So I reverted to the old packages. The connection runs again. But how can I make sure that this patch is never applied again? I tried "zypper al 'strongsw*'". "zypper al" shows that, and "zypper up" does not show any package with "strongsw" at the beginning in the list of packages to be updated. That's OK. But "zypper patch" still annoys me by showing 2 "Solutions": No 1 being to remove the lock, No 2 "do not install patch:SUSE-SLE-Module-Basesystem-15-SP1-2020-743-1.noarch. So I used "zypper al" to add this patch. It shows with "zypper ll", but it is ignored, "zypper patch" still shows 2 solutions. Since there is a "zypper -n patch" running daily, and it exits with Errorlevel 4, I'd love to have a way so that this patch does not show up for "zypper patch", which works fine with "zypper up". "zypper patch" should see that there is a patch in the zypper lock list and should ignore this patch for its action. Can I get this to work? Until this morning I ran "Firefox 68.6.1esr (64-bit)" on openSuSE Leap 15.1. After a software update yesterday night performed by typing "zypper patch", all tabs appeared with this text: Gah. Your tab just crashed. We can help! ... (complete text at http://ariannuccia.de/images.tmp/tab_crashed.pdf) It did not help opening a new tab or trying a different URL. Whatever I tried to open, always the same nonsense described above appeared. So, I downloaded firefox-74.0.1.tar.bz2 to /opt, installed it by typing "tar xjvf firefox-74.0.1.tar.bz2" and replaced /usr/bin/firefox by a symbolic link to /opt/firefox/firefox. This was very simple and has the advantage that I can now run "Firefox 74.0.1 (64-bit)" instead of the prehistoric version 68.6.1esr supplied by openSuSE. Hi, I'm having a problem installing Virtualbox on Opensuse 15.1 with KDE Plasma Version 5.12.8 KDE Frameworks Ver 5.55.0 Qt Version 5.9.7 Kernel Version 5.6.0-rc7-1.g0801cd7-default I installed Virtualbox using Yast. When I try to start Virtualbox I get the following message: Failed to open a session for the virutal machine. Then, in a seperate popup window I get the following message: Kernel driver not installed (rc=1908) The VirtualBox LInux dernel driver is either not loaded or not set up correctly. Pleast try setting it up again by executing '/sbin/bvoxconfig' as root. When I run /sbin/vboxconfig as root, I get this message: Building kernel modules... Build of VirtualBox host kernel modules failed. Look at /var/log/virtualbox.log to find reasons In /var/log/virtualbox.log this message appears: === Building 'vboxdrv' module === make[1]: Entering directory '/usr/src/kernel- modules/virtualbox/src/vboxdrv' /usr/src/kernel-modules/virtualbox/src/vboxdrv/Makefile-header.gmk:193: *** Error: unable to find the headers of the Linux kernel to build against (KERN_DIR=/lib/modules/5.6.0-rc7-1.g0801cd7-default/build). Hello: I have a program that can send its output to a script. I can setup the script command in the program as: <script-name> option1 option2 ..., eg: myscript.sh name time. I know that I can get the options in the script using $1 and $2 etc. But how can I get the program's output that is sent to the script? I would like to write to output to a file. I also would like to use the program's output to different purposes. Can I store it in a variable and use it later, or do I have to save it in a temporary file? [opensuse] modifying postscript file (with pstops or other tool)

Hello: My program produces a postsctipt file which has a text block vertically in the middle of an A4 page. The text block fits A5 size in landscape mode. I would like to convert the ps file from A4 size portrait mode to A5 size landscape mode by shifting and/or rotating the text. I tried to use pstops tool: pstops -w14.8cm -h10.5cm 0$0cm,-7.5cm$ file0.ps out1.ps or pstops -pa5 0L$25.3cm,0cm$ file0.ps out2.ps but they did not work. It seems that pstops crops the original A4 size to A5, and only after cropping it shifts/rotates the page. Therefore the original text block is cut and only part of it goes to the new ps file. ISTR we've had discussions here about bouncing messages from the list server and got as far as diagnosing that they are caused by the mailing list server forwarding messages from DMARC-protected domains. It seems that the libreoffice list has similar problems and Brian Barker made a useful-looking proposal to fix the problem: "There are solutions to this problem, the simplest of which is for the list processor to append something such as ".INVALID" to the From: address in relevant messages, so that they are no longer recognised as coming from a DMARC-conformant domain. Many mailing list providers do this." I wonder if it would be possible to do this for the opensuse lists? Hi all, Yesterday I ran again into a problem which I cannot solve by myself. I updated my TW (with KDE). The update included a kernel update and many more. After rebooting the graphical environment did not start, only thr command line. I have network access, and I also see all things on this laptop. Interestingly, I can play the sound of a movie but cannot play music. Systemctl says I am at graphical target. I tried to boot with the kernel that was replaced with this update and worked fine, but the same happenned: no greaphical environment. What can I do to avoid reinstall and start KDE (or even iceweasel) again. I have 1.5 G of RAM, and from time to time I inadvertently get stuck with swapping overload. At this time it becomes difficult even to swap to the virtual console with ctrl-alt-f1, and having got there, even though I changed the login time-out to 10 minutes, sometimes it times out. Wouldn't it be a good idea if there were a way to get a shell with hi priority urgently? Perhaps there is. Dear listmembers, maybe you readily know, but anyway: if you still use xterm and have a high resolution display (i. E. 3840x2560 like me) you will find that the fonts available "off the shelf" are between hard to read and hardly readable. In order to get this usable again (and you may use different approaches, I like this one because it works for all users the same way ... please do the following: - install terminus fonts ... zypper install zypper install terminus-bitmap-fonts - edit /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XTerm ... - change as follows: Replace the entries for VT100.font and VT100wideFont by *VT100.font: -xos4-terminus-medium-r-normal--32-320-72-72-c-160- iso10646-1 *VT100.boldFont: -xos4-terminus-bold-r-normal--32-320-72-72-c-160- iso10646-1 Other than that: in order to improve the situation on TTY1 .... TTY6, please modify /etc/vconsole.conf: New: FONT=latarcyrheb-sun32.psfu --- Old: FONT=eurlatgr.psfu This will make the console fonts readable. I've noticed there have been some recent (March 13) changes to Wireshark. Previously, when starting, it was necessary to enter the root password. Now, no password is required, but it's no longer possible to select an interface to monitor. This makes it somewhat useless for capturing traffic. About all that can be done is read existing capture files. If opened from a root terminal session, it works normally. I then checked the application in the menu and found the application command had changed from /usr/bin/xdg-su -c /usr/bin/wireshark %f to wireshark %f, which runs it as a mere mortal, in that useless mode. [opensuse] Why swap?

I'm running 15.1 & KDE. One thing I've noticed is swap use increases through time, even though I'm not even using all the real memory. Eventually, it gets to the point where my system bogs down and can become unusable. At the moment, I'm running 13.6 GiB of 15.6 memory and 4.1 of 24 swap. [opensuse] NVIDIA nvcc (CUDA compiler) on Tumbleweed, and gcc versions

I have installed the NVIDIA CUDA RPMS on Tumbleweed. Although they are packaged by NVIDIA for Leap 15.1, they seem to have installed. I am trying to build some neural network software (https://pjreddie.com/darknet/yolo/). It works quite well as just a CPU-based program. However, I am hoping to use this to process many 10s of thousands of high-resolution images. So I want/need to build it with CUDA/GPU support. When running nvcc, I get a message that it does not support gcc versions newer than 8. On Tumbleweed, I have gcc 9. As one does. What is the best way to have two versions of gcc installed? I'm not sure exactly which gcc components nvcc uses. So I guess it would be the most of gcc8. Is it possible to install gcc8 in such a way that it does not become the default compiler? I plan on using it only for this purpose. The result should be a DSO library that I can then link against in my applications when they are built with gcc 9 or whatever the Tumbleweed default compiler is. As an alternative, anyone know if the CUDA package (https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home%3ABumblebee-Project%3AnVidia%3…) in can be used in OBS? As it downloads things, I suspect OBS will not allow this. No idea. I also would need the version of gcc that CUDA 9 requires. Then I could build the package there, and have a new openSUSE package to boot. We are setting up a cluster of computers that will be connected via a 10 GB network. The switch we are considering is something like https://www.netgear.com/business/products/switches/smart/XS748T.aspx The sales blurb says: Up to eight 10-Gigabit Ethernet links can be aggregated into a virtual 80‑Gbps connection In openSUSE, would this be related to bonding slaves? I have never used this. The goal would be that one computer (primarily a file server type of thing) has a high bandwidth stream for reading and writing data to the switch, where numerous other computers read and write via their single cable. This server would have, say, 4 10 GBit Ethernet ports connected to the switch. Ideally these would appear to be a single network. Am I thinking correctly? Anyone have any advice on this kind of thing? Hello I'm trying to setup an LDAP server on Leap 15.1 >From this document https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/security/single-html/book.secur… I ran zypper install 389-ds yast2 ldap-server These commands do not exist The 389 Directory Server is controlled by 3 primary commands: dsctl Manages a local instance and requires root permissions. Requires you to be connected to a terminal which is running the directory server instance. Used for starting, stopping, backing up the database and more. dsconf The primary tool used for administration and configuration of the server. Manages an instance's configuration via its external interfaces. This allows you to make configuration changes remotely on the instance. dsidm Used for identity management (manage users, groups, passwords etc.). The permissions are granted by access controls, so users can reset their own password or change details of their own account, for example. Creating the 389 Directory Server Instance You create the instance with the dscreate command. It can take a configuration file (*.inf) which defines the instance configuration settings. Alternatively, the command can be run in an interactive mode. All the configuration/setup fail with Details: No such file or directory - /usr/sbin/dscreate or /usr/sbin/dscreate /usr/sbin/dscreate: No such file or directory How do you setup LDAP when the tools are missing Searching for dscreate only finds this /usr/share/dirsrv/inf/dscreate.map Any ideas? Dear listmembers, I am (AFAIK) bound to using KDM rather than i. e. using SDDM because I need two in parallel X11 - sessions running on tty7 and tty8 in my case. The disadvantage right now: because the resolution of my display is quite high (3840x2160) the fonts and the graphics of the login display are *very* small (too small for my old eyes :-)) Anyone having a solution on how to enlarge the size of the KDM login - window?
