[opensuse] NIS client not functional after upgrade from opensuse 12.2->13.1

Good morning, after offline distro update (actualization from DVD) I cannot list users from ypages: ypcat passwd No such map passwd.byname. Reason: Can't bind to server which serves this domain rpcbind and ypbind service is up and working and listening (netstat -tcp --listen listed this ports). If I test my /etc/yp.conf by "ypbind -c", output is "Config file /etc/yp.conf is ok." [opensuse] spyker dock

Hello, I just buy a "spyker sata dock" like this one http://www.amazon.fr/Spyker-DOCK-SPY-2NFREE-Station-daccueil-Disque/dp/B006… on my main computer, there is no problem. on my laptop, with usb2/usb3, it works only on the usb3 connector. As far as I can understand, it keeps trying to connect as usb3: the usb3 led flashes, and I see "xuhdi connect" (or similar word) on dmesg, several lines. I can't try it with windows as the only disk I have at hand (a ssd) have only linux file systems and windows can't read them (the device list shows a mass storage device) any idea? I think, that question is old https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/417170-Donations-to-Opensuse-team and I have read it in different forums. But without clear answer. It is possible to buy clothings/wearables http://shop.opensuse.org/ and in germany you can buy openSUSE as box http://www.edv-buchversand.de/suse/ There they write on its webside and on the box: "Open Source Press supports the community: From every sold box goes a donation to the free openSUSE-project!". But how much is the donation, when anybody buys a box for 49.95 Euro? There isn't mentioned, how many Euros going to openSUSE. Would it help more to buy a SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop https://www.suse.com/products/desktop/how-to-buy/ instead of an openSUSE box? Goes then more money to the development of openSUSE? The sad thing would be, that SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop is GNOME based. And I prefer KDE. Or is it possible to donate to openSUSE direct? A lot of OpenSource-projects have that possibility. [opensuse] new laptop?

Hi everyone, It has been some time since I have been on this list, as things have been very busy with life lately. I was just looking over some of the recent postings and I am glad to see that everyone is still working hard at helping each other. I am coming to a new point in life in which I need to buy a new laptop. And I am committed to staying with openSUSE, so I just wanted to throw a quick email out there and see if any red flags pop up for anyone. The laptop I want to buy is the ASUS ROG GL551JM-DH71 Notebook. It has the following specifications: Operating System: Windows 8.1 (64 bit) Processor: Intel Core i7-4710HQ Haswell Processor Speed: 2.5GHz (Turbo up to 3.5GHz) Memory: 16 GB System Memory (DDR3L) Video Graphics: NVIDIA GTX860M 2GB GDDR5 Hard Drive: 1TB 7200 RPM Optical Drive: DVD±RW/CD-RW Display: 15.6" FHD (1920*1080), matte Webcam: HD Camera Network Card: Integrated 10/100/1000 Mbps Fast Ethernet Wireless Option: 802.11AGN Bluetooth: 4.0 Card Reader: SD, MMC, MS Audio: ROG AudioWizard Keyboard: Illuminated Chiclet Interface: 3*USB 3.0 ports 1x Headphone-out & Audio-in Combo Jack 1x LAN RJ-45 1 x HDMI 1 x mini Display Port I am just wondering, does anyone know if there might be a problem with setting up dual boot and opensuse 13.2, or a problem with the nvidia driver, the network card, or the audio when I install opensuse on the machine? I did find that the nvidia driver available for download from nvidia does support this card, but I was wondering if anyone has some experience with this driver. I couldn't find anything more specific on the network card other than that it is "integrated", which I assume means it comes as part of the motherboard. Is that right? Once before, a few years ago, I bought a laptop that the network card just wouldn't work well with opensuse. It worked fine in windows, but not in opensuse. So I was stuck with it for about 2 years until I finally sold the laptop and got a different one. So that is kind of the main thing I am thinking about, and if anyone has some experience with this laptop it would be great. also BTW, I am not a gamer, even though this is a gaming laptop. I am looking at this because of the performance specs. Any thoughts or advice? I would appreciate it. "Basically, the easiest way to debug ANY networked software is to first run the client software on the same machine as the server, and once you can get THAT working... then you can MUCH more easily figure out who to run the client on another machine and connect to the server host successfully." Yes, you are right on that. I do web development and run a browser and Apache2 on the same (Windows) machine. Also, I do not have a linux VNCviewer. I use java enabled browser to connect to my other vnc servers (Windows and Suse Linux) In this case, I have all machines at my desk, I can connect to the openSUSE 13.2 machine from a Windows 7 machine with vncviewer.exe. I can connect locally on the LAN or using the internet through my firewall (IPCop) With the 13.2 machine and the Win 7 machine with the vncviewer on it at my desk, I can tinker with both machines easily. the VNC connection is no problem. In addition to the 'one time' connection, I can also start the vnc server from a logged in session, and then connect to the' persistent session' and use KDE just fine. My problem I think is related to starting KDE (or other Desktop Environment). I have not found a log or anything that can tell my why the KDE (or other DE) fails to launch. 'If you can get VNC to work on your 12.2 machine, then try using as close as possible ot the same configuration on the 13.2 machine.' Yes, as you can imagine, I have looked at all the settings that work and try them. In the VNC area they are basically the same. It appears that the launching of the desktop is different in 12.2 and 13.2, so that part, my problem, does not help. Thanks for all you efforts. [opensuse] latest gnumeric update segfaults

Hi All, Just an FYI re OpenSUSE 13.2 x86 64-bit KDE 4.14.3 I just had to roll back gnumeric (& gnumeric-lang) to the prior version due to the latest updates making it unstable / unusable. Joe, Thanks for your kind suggestions. I do not see how doing the steps you suggest addresses the KDE failure to start from the KDM login prompt. Normally, my VNC server is started by xinetd on port 5901. I can change that to 5900 and connect, but at this point I can not tell what display number it uses. Behavior is the same. But, I assume that you are expecting me to work on the local machine using the virtual consoles. Never done any of that. What information is it that you are expecting me to find performing the 5 steps you listed? I am thinking no one has gotten a login to a DE to work over VNC on 13.2. Looks my best solution is to use 12.2 which I use daily. [opensuse] Libreoffice issue

Hi Is there an opensuse list for discussing Libreoffice? I can't find a specific one. i'm getting a regular issue with opening a writer document, copying some text (highlight with mouse and ctrl-c) and when i'm about to do something with the copied text, the keyboard locks up (num light on) and the mouse can move about the screen but cannot click on anything. I have to reboot the system to recover. [opensuse] KDE does not launch on login when connected with VNC

Greetings! I am new to the mail list, so I apologize for any fopahs :-) Although there are several 'how to's" regarding VNC on openSUSE 13.2 I have not found anyone who has actually been successful in creating a one time session that logs into any desktop. What I want to do is use VNC to connect to my opensuse 13.2 machine, get the login page, login and get the KDE desktop. (I do this successfully with opensuse 12.2, it works great.) My VNC connects just fine, asks for my password and then presents me with the login screen. If my username/password is incorrect, it reflects that. When I enter the correct username and password, the login dialog disappears but nothing happens, just the normal green background. Three or maybe it is 4 minutes later, the login dialog reappears. Something times out I suppose. Everything works normally locally. In the system message file I find these two lines essentially at the same time: ...kdm: localhost:1[1094]: pam_unix(xdm:session): session opened for user paxton by (uid=0) ...kdm: localhost:1[1094]: pam_unix(xdm:session): session closed for user paxton Since VNC connects and seems stable, and KDE works fine locally, I figure there is some issue with launching KDE while connected with VNC, but I do not know where to look to fix this.
