[opensuse] Getting ready for 13.2 - A little help?

I've been holding back with 12.3 (and quite happy with it), but don't want to fall too far behind, and am planning to once again disrupt life I know it with 13.2 on my principal workstation. (all properly backed up and stuff). If 12.3 wasn't going to fall off support, I wouldn't be doing this at all. 12.3 was THAT good! So now the big question: When it all goes live next month..... Regular 13.2 -or- Tumbleweed(new)? Which gives me the best chance of not fighting broken stuff and being reasonably current for the longest time? I tend to keep up with updates, running apper and at least once a week checking yast mostly for the KDE and Xorg updates. (I generally know how to stay out of trouble in this area and avoid breaking my system). What would you guys recommend? Also If you have an opinion: Why would anyone install 13.2 and face an upgrade every X months, when they could just as well run the new Tumbleweed? [opensuse] extraneous apostrophe in grub config?

I know we're apparently being naughty if we mention 13.2RC1 in here, but I have a question that would apply equally to 13.1 anyway. What is wrong in the following grub.cfg line? GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=" resume=/dev/sda6 splash=silent quiet elevator='missing showopts" I removed the apostrophe after the elevator= part, and got the system to boot, although it threw some error message about missing showopts which I overrided by pressing a key. I don't know if there should be a closing apostrophe before the quote mark or some other fix. This was a result of me just doing an install of 13.2RC1 on an old laptop, but it was horked when configuring grub2 with some error message 'opensuse grub unexpected eof while looking for matching...' - I didn't note down the rest. So the above was the default line placed in the grub config, which doesn't seem correct, and the machine wouldn't boot at all without going through the rescue system and fixing it. I've not found anything specifically relating to this when Googling, but from bits and pieces of vaguely related errors and bugs in previous and other distros, I tracked it down to that file. So I could file a bug report, but I wonder how the grub line actually should read? How can I set the system up, (13.1) so that it starts up without X11 and then start it by hand when I need to. I tried to do this but the changes to X11 make it very difficult. [opensuse] file browsing (dolphin and konqueror) hangs for 2 min periodically

I have a 13.1 installation with KDE that is showing some annoying behaviour. Every 10 minutes or so dolphin just hangs for approx. 2 minutes and does not do anything. The entire window freezes and jsut buffers every click I do. There is no process keeping it busy and no indication what it is waiting for. When the freeze happens, all instances of dolphin and of konqueror (as file browser) also freeze. When the freeze passes, everything works fine and fast. I have no clue what to look for. [opensuse] USB check fails but SUM check passes

I have been having the DICKENS trying to get the iso check to pass. I have tried 2 usb stick's and 3 or 4 downloads all different ways. When I burn the ISO using SUSE image burning software or the alternitive IMAGE USB this is what happens. It has nothing to do with sysvinit or systemd. I was using ReiserFS and resizing the live file systems long before systemd was available. Ditto LVM. People here have been using other live resizeable file systems with sysvinit, some of those people have expressed a discontent with systemd, but that hasn't affected their choice of file system. The resizing of a live file system has nothing to do with the choice of init. Like ReiserFS, BtrrFs is a b-tree journalled file system and can manage online live resizing. You might also look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XFS#Online_resizing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NILFS#Supported_Features Live resizing of file systems existed and was practised long before the advent of Linux :-) If you take a look at the last column at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_systems#Features you'll see that with some qualification, even the extX file systems are live resizeable. RTFM RESIZE2FS(8) The qualification being <quote> If the filesystem is mounted, it can be used to expand the size of the mounted filesystem, assuming the kernel and the file system supports on-line resizing. </quote> YMMV. That's one reason I use ReiserFS. The other is never having to worry about the inode to data ratios. All these file systems existed before systemd. The ability to expand one of them has nothing to do with systemd. Having an system that automatically mounts according to a state definition table has nothing to do with systemd. If there is a 'bug" it is that people could arbitrarily alter the system configuration so that it was not in accord with what the system definition tables said it was. If, though human oversight (which is all to common and why we automate so much) they forgot to put it back, then things are screwed and there's no trail since they didn't update the configuration definition (or if you wish, description) tables. [opensuse] 12.3 no sound you tube in firefox

Running 12.3 KDE4 4.10.5 I have Xonar STX soundcard, everything works (VLC, Clementine even Netflix using pipelight) for sound. I have been running Linux Mint mainly for a while as that was the only way I could get Netflix to work. Anyway having been able to get pipelight to work in 12.3 have reverted to 12.3 for my main use. Today I tried to run youtube videos from Firefox and whatever I do I don't get any sound. System sounds and all other multimedia progs work for sound. I have Mint in a vm and using the same hardware youttube videos work. Welcome suggestions where to look for the problem please ?
