[opensuse] Gnome2 vs. Gnome3. Why not just port the old environment to the new toolkit?

>From my understanding GTK3 is fine. The hated thing in Gnome 3 is the GnomeSHell.GTK 2 and 3 are compatible from what I understand. I've also had to deal with an A3 scanner/copier/printer combo from Sharp, but that cost several thousand bucks. It had some issues with postscript files, but in general it worked too. [opensuse] opensuse 12.1 static ip problem

Hello, I've a basic problem using a static ip adres in opensuse 12.1. When I configure the static ip-adres in yast the configuration is accepted. but the ip-adres is not assigned to the network card. DHCP however is working fine. setup opensuse is a xen guest on a opensuse 11.4 xen server opensuse 12.1 x64 (with all online updates) I do the following steps 1) open yast -> network devices. 2) assign ip-adres 3) save Things I notice: 1) ifconfig do not show a ip-adres 2) /etc/sysconfig/netwerk/ifcfg..... seems to show a normal 3) no strange messages in log/messages. it only reports up and down of the nic. 4) When I start a ping from a other machine to the supossed ip-adres. there is a brief moment the ip-adres replies. This sometime during yast activating the config. 5) this is reproduce with every installation I make. [opensuse] Remote Desktop Preferences loop

I'm running 11.4 and I use Remote Desktop Preferences to view one of my machine's console remotely. Not sure what happened, possibly last update, seems to have broken it. When I load the preferences gui, it keeps looping through "Checking the connectivity of this machine..." and I'm not able to view the desktop remotely. I googled a bit but didn't find much. Hi everyone I want to be able to unlock xscreensaver when authenticated against Kerberos. The KDC is Samba 4 and I can logon fine to the domain. I used Yast to add the pam_krb5 package and ran pam-config -a --krb5 Now, only root can login in single mode. /etc/pam.d/common-password before adding kerberos (works fine, but cannot unlock xscreensaver): password requisite pam_pwcheck.so nullok cracklib password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so use_authtok password sufficient pam_unix2.so use_authtok nullok password required pam_ldap.so try_first_pass use_authtok /etc/pam.d/common-password after adding krb5 (no one can login apart from booting into single user): password requisite pam_pwcheck.so nullok cracklib password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so use_authtok password [default=ignore success=1] pam_succeed_if.so uid > 999 quiet password sufficient pam_unix2.so use_authtok nullok password sufficient pam_krb5.so password required pam_ldap.so try_first_pass use_authtok I think it's something to do with this line: password [default=ignore success=1] pam_succeed_if.so uid > 999 quiet Does this mean that no user with a uid of less than 1000 will be able to authenticate? What if I'm in a bar and the KDC is not available? I'm locked out of my local account. This is a laptop. Ahhgghh!! [opensuse] motherboard search engine

Hello: Sorry for this offtopic question but this is the only mailing list with high traffic I am subscribed to. Is there a search engine/page for PC motherboards where I can find motherboards by properties, eg. floppy, serial port, parallel port, IDE port support? Currently it is hard to find a motherboard that supports these devices and browsing specifications one by one for all modern motherboards would be tedious. I found one page at: http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/ but it can not search for the abovementioned device(s) support. [opensuse] FTP 425 Errors with openSUSE

I'm puzzled. I have multiple CentOS5, CentOS6, openSUSE 11.4 and openSUSE 12.1 boxes behind the same firewall. The CentOS boxes can make FTP connections; but attempting to use FTP from either version of openSUSE always fails [two 12.1 boxes, one 11.4 boxes]. I've disabled the local machine firewalls, verfified the conntrack_ftp module is loaded on the network's firewall [an iptables box, and the other CentOS boxes work anyway...], etc... I just can get FTP to work from these boxes and I'm stumped. [opensuse] Multihomed network install

Hi list, I'm trying to (re)install a multihomed server with many interfaces with SLES (in this case, although my curiosity also applies to openSUSE 12.1). I'm using a network install, specifying network parameters and Autoyast XML file on the kernel command line. Using the "netdev" parameter, I'm able to specify which interface to use, but the problem is that interfaces don't get the same names across reboots and only one has connection to the install server. I have to try several times until it boots with the correct name/interface association. Is there a way to specify the interface by MAC address instead of by name?
