[opensuse] WiFi card slow to start

Hello, I'm stuck with a problem. I've got a PCI WiFi card (using the rt61 chip) in a machine runing SuSE 9.3. I've managed to instal the driver and configure the /etc/Wireless/RT61STA/rt61sta.dat file - although I may have made some mistake there, teh docs are not very clear. The point is: interface ra0 is there. However, if I do an iwconfig, I get this: RT61 Wireless ESSID "" (no access point) ... blablabla... So I have no connection. The ssid name is given both in the rt61sta.dat file and in Yast, although YAST insists on configuring wlan0... Basically, getting online is not difficult: "iwconfig ra0 essid any", and everything works. The problem is that this machine is meant to be installed in a place where other people can use it. They will *not* be Linux specialists and I do *not* want to give away the root password, so I have to find a way to run this command (or anything that brings the same result) at boot. I tried a command in boot.local, but it fails because device is "down". I also tried a script in /etc/rc.d/rcS.d but to no avail. Maybe someone who knows better than I do has an idea. Is it possible to give users the right to execulte just one command (iwconfig)? [SLE] How to redired outside http address to local box?

Hello all, I have (maybe) very stupid question. I need to simulate our company server on my SuSE 9.2 box, because: 1. I don't want to change public server content 2. I don't have access to that server 3. I need to test my software, which on the end will use addresses from our company server to download something, but I need to simulate various situations and the easiest would by on local box. Hello on the list I am using suse 9.3 with postfixand spamassasing, but i get a lot of spam anyway. Does anybody know how to stop mail from .biz? And I want to stop mail who have an URL for .biz Thanks in advance /tage

[SLE] Weird Kernel Panic/Crash

Mates: Have you ever seen anything like this??? It looks like something or some bit of memory got really weird and pissed off. Server lived another 5 minutes then died. A reboot fixed it. Any thoughts?? [SLE] sensors question

Hello SuSE people, Running 10.0 on AMD64. After installing the package, I ran sensors-detect in Konsole. Did all of the probing, testing, etc. Then it suggested additions to two config files before it finished. The following is a paste from the Konsole. To load everything that is needed, add this to some /etc/rc* file: #----cut here---- # I2C adapter drivers modprobe i2c-viapro modprobe i2c-isa # I2C chip drivers modprobe eeprom modprobe w83627hf # sleep 2 # optional /usr/bin/sensors -s # recommended #----cut here---- Question is What file does that get added to. I have only an rc.status file and a rc.splash. Doesn't look like that statement should go into either of them. Once that is done and the program is configured how is the program called? Just type "sensors" in the Konsole? [SLE] Install of 10.1 - Not Happy!

Having followed this list for a couple of weeks, and successfully installed 10.0 in a test partition, I decided to install 10.1 from the Linux Magazine DVD in the same partition. The install was fairly intuitive, though I was concerned that the expected GRUB placement option did not appear, so I aborted and tried again, this time looking in "expert", where there seemed to be confirmation that GRUB would go in hda3, where I wanted it. Further down the track, in hardware configuration, the graphics card entry read "no proposal", and an error was flagged. But as the installer seemed to have no problems with my graphics card I went ahead. The update found only two very minor items, so I added Zen, rug, and the Audacity I needed to test as a priority. Problem 1: The installation finished, but instead of KDE I was presented with a command line login, presumably due to the graphics card error. Somewhat cheesed off, I rebooted. Problem 2: in spite of the appearance of having put GRUB in hda3, the install had evidently put it in the MBR of hda, wiping the previous GRUB that booted my everyday FC4 on hdc. Not Nice. Having rebuilt GRUB I am back in FC4. I had intended to move to SUSE 10.1 instead of FC5, but now I am considering Kubuntu Dapper, which successfully upgraded from Breezy online. I have yet to trawl the archives for a solution to these two problems, and it is far too late at night here in the antipodes to start now. The graphics card one sounds familiar, but the GRUB issue is new to me. Every other install I have done has been very clear as to where GRUB is to go, though FC4 consistently failed to put it anywhere, so fortunately I had kept notes on how to create it. I have been very impressed by the quality of the correspondence on this list, so I hope I can find solutions and continue to run SUSE into the future. vsound for alsa?

Anyone know of anything like vsound that works for alsa? I'd like to use it to capture realplayer stuff and real sends it's output to /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p vs /dev/dsp which is what vsound uses. http://www.vsound.org/ -- One day at a time, one second if that's what it takes

[SLE] Strange mouse behavour.

I'm running 10.1 on an HP dv8000. I sometimes get some strange behavour that seems to relate to mouse movement. For example, I bring up the start menu and select shutdown. The shutdown window pops up with the various options (shutdown, restart, etc). When I move the mouse over to the window, it dissappears when the mouse pointer touches it. If it try it a few times I can eventually get inside the window to select a option. Also, if I navigate around the window and enter it from the right side to get to the buttons, it works OK. Anyone seen anything like this before? Thanks! Doug
