Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Mount Windows NT(NTFS) drive as drive Z: for all users

Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? SUSE9.3 - SUSE Plugger problem with USB Serial port cable

Hi, I am using a USB to Serial port cable. Initially when I start the computer and linux then insert the USB Serial port cable the device is set as /dev/ttyUSB0. If the USB Serial Port cable is removed then reinserted it becomes /dev/ttyUSB1. Each time the USB Port cable is removed then reinserted the device name is increased by one. It appears to me that upon removeal of the device that SUSE Plugger is no removeing the device from the device list. Has anyone seen this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this? x server problem

Hello guys, I am having a bit of a problem getting a proper graphical session on an IBM desktop with an LCD monitor. [opensuse] missing ksyms form my kernel

Hi, I downloaded and compiled a 2.6.16 vanilla kernel from kernel.org for my suse 10.1 box. Now I am trying to compile and install some drivers/modules for this kernel. Everything goes well and the drivers/modules get generated and produce some RPMS for me to install. The problem I run into is that when I try to install the RPM packages I get a missing rpm dependency. error: Failed dependencies: ksym(schedule) = 1000e51 is needed by There is a suse kernel-syms rpm which will probably solve this if I where using the suse kernel. But I am using a vanilla kernel from kernel.org. Any clues on how to generate a kernel and kernel-syms rpm on my suse box from a vanilla source kernel? Hi all, I am using SuSE 9.3. Today i updated firefox from 1.0.8 to 1.5.0.6-1.4 (using YaST) After the update, as soon as i click the shortcut on my desktop firefox starts 2 times. The first is very quick available, but you can see that it tries to load a second time, which fails. I can use firefox normally after this. When i start firefox from the "start" button and then the internet -> web browser function, it starts normal. When i make a new shortcut to firefox, and click it, again it tries to open it 2 times. When i look in the properties of the desktop shortcut (which is the standard icon/setup), firefox is started with the command firefox %u The firefox shortcut from the "start" menu starts with the same command. The first time i started firefox after the update (using the desktop shortcut) it started normal. All further attempts try to start it twice. This happens for all users, and on two different computers. What went wrong and how do i correct this? dvdrip problems

I downloaded the dvdrip RPM package from http://packman.links2linux.org/index.php4?action=175&vn=2 for SuSE 10.1 and it installed just fine. When I try to run dvdrip from the command line I get the following: Can't locate Locale/TextDomain.pm in @INC (@INC contains: lib /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i586-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/i586-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/i586-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl .) at /usr/bin/dvdrip line 21. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/dvdrip line 21. In other words, it's not finding "Locale::TextDomain" in the dvdrip script. (Running through the SuSE "start" menu doesn't do anything except fail out too.) Ideas as to how to get it to see the right files? Thanks! wmeler

IRQ problems?

SUSE 10.1 doesn't see my internal modem (best data ISA, hardware based controller) and when I try to configure my sounds cards ( cs4236B and cs4610/11 accelerator) and error occurs with a message indicating it could be due to a IRQ error. How does one even begin to address possible IRQ problems/conflicts ?? Mike

Differences between rpm-based distros

I wanted to run Yahoo Messenger on Suse 10.1 but the Yahoo web site provides packages for other distros than Suse. I tried to install Yahoo Messenger anyway, and miracle, it worked. It brings to mind the question of what requirements a package must meet to be able to run on Suse. How can I tell a non-Suse package will be able to run on Suse (10.1) successfully? Rich

xgl and soo many gnome dependencies

Hello Why does xgl have so many gnome dependencies such as gstreamer and gnome-audio, why would a window manager need these. Being as I only use KDE I would really rather not have all of these extra dependencies for gnome. Massive Fonts (GeForce 5200)

I've been having a problem with my graphics card and SLED 10. The fonts are so big they take up a quarter of the screen, so the system is basically unusable. Interestingly the problem can be excaserbated on other distributions by using XGL, but even if I turn off XGL in SLED I still get this problem. I've done a search on the web and the only other person I can find with this problem was using the proprietary nvidia driver and a GeForce 5200... but this was in 2004. Is this a weird problem with my GPU? Any idea how I can fix this? -- Andrew Betts Jasp

Disappearing mouse cursor

I'm running KDE under SuSE 10.0. Sometimes when I've left the computer running for a while by itself and the screen saver comes on, I come back and discover that there's no mouse cursor. I don't see any pattern to when it happens and when it doesn't. So-- 1. Is there anything I can do less drastic than Ctl-Alt-Bksp (which works) to get the cursor back? It clearly must be something that I can do from the keyboard alone. 2. What is likely to be causing the problem? Paul

xgl and twinview

Hello I have been trying out xgl and been reading up on xgl and have read that cvs versions of xgl support twinview. I have installed xgl via yast but still when maximizing a window it spans both screens. [opensuse] Problem with bold fonts

Hi, I have installed inkscape-0.43-20 from SUSE 10.1 and have the problem that truetype fonts in bold are not usable. That means: "Arial, Standard" in Inkscape's font dialog is the same as "Arial, Fett". It does not seem to be language issue as "Arial Black, Standard" is also the same as "Arial Black, Bold". What works is italic <-> non-italic, but that's about it. Bold fonts _are_ installed, xlsfonts also shows them and xfontsel successfully shows a bold font when asked to (and a non-bold when asked to). Maybe this is a bug of Xft or the GTK font selector?
