accessing partitions

I am having a poblem accessing partitions. I use dosemu to access three fat32 partitions: dosc, dosd, and dose. They point to /media/dosc, ... I changed these to john users, but it seems that it has changed back, on its own. I am now unable to write to these partitions. What are the two bottom entries of the /media for? What does user_xattr mean and why is it needed? Why is acl needed? 9.3 install on Compaq 3017CL notebook hangs or fails to find hard drive

Have Compaq Presario 3017CL notebook with SuSE 9.2 installed and running fine. Trying to install/upgrade SuSE 9.3. When booting from the DVD and selecting "Installation", the system hangs while "Initializing". When booting from the DVD and selecting "Installation w/o ACPI" or "Installation - Safe mode" the installation ask for keyboard, etc. but then says it can find no hard drive. I did not experience a problem like this when installing SuSE 9.1 or SuSE 9.2 on this system. Any idea how to get past this? Boot parameters to try, etc.? Thanks R.Parr, RHCE Temporal Arts

Asterisk on Suse minimal installation based on Suse Rescue - what to add to be bootable on HD partition ?

Hi, I'm trying to go route some of Asterisk users already proposed for Asterisk minimal system. I've started from Suse Rescue system image - I've put it into HD partition. But since rescue is spawned from working system it has empty /boot directories and is not directly bootable if put on HD. I've tried to transfer or install kernel and grub to this partition, but no success (I first access to partition with chroot to make additions...). I get errors on kernel rpm -ivh installation (I guess there are no directories and dependencies found in chroot) and also get error on "grub-install /dev/hda7": Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device Is there anyone more experienced with some advice, howto or example what need to be added to partition to be bootable on HD ? Amarok - Musicbrainz tagging doesn't work on ogg files

Hi all. I have been succesfully using amarok for tagging my mp3 files, but it refuses to work on .ogg. The first time i try to tag an .ogg file, it behaves as if it were generating the digital fingerprint for the song, but then it fails saying that there is no information available for that song at MusicBrainz (even for very, very well known songs!) Then, if i try to tag the file again(doesn't matter ifi try to tag that same song or another one), it fails immediately (ie. without even trying to generate the fingerprint) and states that there's no info for that file at MB. Anyone has any ideas of what could be happening? Thank you all, Anderson

cvs with xinetd on Suse 8.2

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me with this problem.. I'm setting up cvs pserver (a customer requested it so no I cannot use subversion ;-)) on a suse 8.2 server with xinetd and it works, so thats the good news, the bad news: I want it to work with tcpd so I can make the setup more secure but when I try that I cannot login to the cvs server, and I get this in my /var/log/messages Jun 23 10:28:07 servername tcpd[30218]: connect from 1.2.3.4 (1.2.3.4) Jun 23 10:28:38 servername last message repeated 31711 times This is my working /etc/xinetd.d/cvs without tcpd: service cvspserver { socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = cvs group = cvs server = /usr/bin/cvs server_args = -f --allow-root=/usr/local/cvsroot pserver } This is the "problem" /etc/xinetd.d/cvs { socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = cvs group = cvs server = /usr/sbin/tcpd server_args = /usr/bin/cvs -f --allow-root=/usr/local/cvsroot pserver } regards Chantal

Command Line Packet Sniffer

I need a command line based packet sniffer. (I would use tethereal but this system has no graphical stuff.) ALl it needs to do is collect raw packets for analysis by ethereal on a different box. Thank you, Lucky Leavell

MPlayer Plugin hangs

I installed the MPlayer plugin so I could play WM in Firefox. However, when it starts, it seems to load ok, but stops and says "buffering 0%". Has anybody got this working in 9.2 ?

9.3 won't install on Athlon64 with SATA

Very frustrating. SuSE 9.3 is far too slow on my old machine (PentiumII-500) so I purchased an Athlon64 machine (Asus A8V-E motherboard, SATA hard drive, blue trim, pretty lights, ... ) Cannot install SuSE 9.3 from the DVD or CD media). General problem seems to be "locating info file" and a hang. Googling suggests problems with SATA and AMD64 combination. I tried disabling SATA mode, but get a non-helpful "Installation error". Novell's site is hopeless. SuSE only talks about SATA for 9.0. Any suggestions? Paul Alfille

pointing stick on dell latitude d600

Hi, after all I installed successfully 9.3 on this machine. Now the problem I have is, that during the install both the touchpad and the stick (the nice thing between the keys on the keyboard) were working, and I was able to use both to move the mouse pointer. But then, after the install, on the first login, the plugger discovered the "right" type of the device - ALPS DualPoint TouchPad - asked for root password to configure it. And after this "configuration" the stick works no more, as well as its buttons. The touchpad itself and its buttons are OK. As I prefer to use the stick, does anyone know a solution for this problem? I have found a similar post on the suse forums for 9.2, but no solution. Cheers Sunny

Boosting performance

I'm running SuSE 9.2 on a Proliant DL380, was working fine, only had problems copy and entire tree from one FS to another (it seems to hang). The backup to tape was during 3 hours. The changes made (/boot/grub/menu.lst): * Deleted the "desktop" kernel parameter * Changed the "elevator" kernel parameter from "as" to "cfq" Now, the backups takes 1h 40 min to finish, any comments?
