[SLE] 6.4 install via plip interface

Hi everyone, I want to install Suse 6.4 to my HP Omnibook 4000C 486DX 50 16 MB ram notebook. Since the laptop does not have a CDROM drive I wanted to install via plip interface via NFS from the desktop. I read the plip how to and the NFS how to documents and currently I have the NFS and plip interface working on the desktop. Using the boot disk of 6.4 I have booted the laptop. When I want to install the plip module I insert the modules disk choose the plip but nothing happens. If I choose nfs install from the menu it says please load a network module first. [SLE] How to configure DHCP server and client ??

Hi! everybody Can somebody help me understand how to make things such that DHCP works? I am using SuSE 6.3. I have installed dhcpd with the proper configuration on a machine to act as a DHCP server. The network ethernet card is properly configured. To avoid problems of broadcast, I entered the required route in the routing table to receive all broadcast for 255.255.255.255. Finally I run dhcpd deamon which shows that it is listening to requests. I also installed dhclient on a machine to act as DHCP client with the proper configuration. I run dhclient, however, no offers respond to DHCPDISCOVER sent by dhclient. I run ethereal on the DHCP server, but it seem that it doen not see the broadcasts. Can anyone help. [SLE] OT - Naming Conventions

Hi, Slightly off topic, but does anybody know of widely used naming conventions used for shell scripting? Oracle uses the optimal flexible architecture, which describes variables both within sql and for naming sql scripts, but I have not found anything similar for unix/linux. If anyone could point to a resource, I'd be most appreciative. [SLE] Segmentation fault + Aiee's + Oops !!

The Aiee messages have been clipped from /var/log/warn, and the Oops screen dump has been faithfully copied down to the last digit. /var/log/boot.msg is included at the end. ========================================================================== Hello all, Can someone please help me work this out. I believe I have a hardware problem, either in memory or the CPU, but am not sure which. If someone more experienced at diagnosing this type of problem on Linux can give the following a once over, I'd be very grateful. This is a brand new system, 1 week old. It has an AMD Athlon 550Mhz CPU, 128MB of memory, two UDMA66 disks (8GB for /boot, swap, / and 20GB 7200rpm for other data) and two 3Com 3C905B-TX network cards. The system is intended to be an internet server for my home network. It's running SuSE 6.3 (2.2.13 kernel). The first indication something was amiss was a system freeze up during the SuSE install. It just stopped in the middle of installing the contents of CD1. I could get nothing from the install screen, but was able to change virtual consoles to look at the install log. Something in the install had falled over with a Segmentation fault. Restarting the install again seemed to go through ok. The next think I spotted was these strange errors appearing in /var/log/warn. Are these semaphore's Thread resources, or system V semaphores? What does this message mean? I've also been getting quite a number of these messages too: modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-15 During this time I noticed more strange Segmentation faults. A couple of times while SuSEConfig runs various scripts after commiting changes made in Yast (a really odd place to segfault). But the worst was while trying to build my own kernel for the first time. I was trying to clean up some stuff (like RAID, etc) and include support for the various firewall options. make menuconfig ran ok, but 'make depend' got about about half way through and then started to Segmentation fault processing various files. I couldn't continue. I have another system here, my older PC that I'd just upgraded from SuSE 6.1 to 6.3, so I NFS mounted the kernel source tree and copied it over to a new directory, remade the linux softlink and this time the kernel built ok. At this point I tried experimenting with ip_forward and ipchains. I couldn't get it to work. What struck me as odd is that I could ping the public network interface card, from a PC on the the private network, even when a cat'ing the /proc ip_forward file clearly showed ip_forwarding to be turned off in the kernel (i.e. it returned 0). I can't believe that is correct. Anyway, I gave up on this for a while (too tired with it) and switch to setting up squid for proxy http access. This worked ok. Then, this evening, as I was preparing to configure sendmail for the first time, I fired up Yast from a telnet session and it Segmenation faulted. On the second attempt it hung the session. I tried to run a ps(1) to find the pid from a local kvt and that also hung. So I switched to a virtual console and tried logging in, that hung also. Back in X-windows I tried a shutdown -r, that segfaulted, so did reboot. By this point I was VERY worried. I had no choice but to power-cycle. After forcing a reboot the system crashed while fsck'ing hdb2, an 18GB partition. This is the first time it's ever had to fsck all system partitions contiguously before as they are usually in a clean state. What I believe has caused it is that I've changed the pattern of memory usage for the system. In setting up squid I gave it 16MB of memory cache to play with. It's now running into more serious trouble than it was before. In my experience, random segfaults like this occur due to one of three causes: 1) a portion of memory is bad. 2) a CPU or CPU cache is bad 3) bad blocks in swap cause corruption when swapped out pages are read in again. I'm not swapping at the moment so it's got to be one of the first two. Thing is, how to I tell? I'm used to dealing with Tru64 Alpha systems, where the binary event log traps and logs CPU Exceptions and bad memory reads/writes. Here, I'm blind. My gut tells me it's memory, but I can't confirm it. Is there anything I can do other than start taking bits back to the PC supplier? [SLE] YaST, rc.config and startup scripts

Greetings, I need to set ssh up to run full-time on my system, and start at boot. So far I've read the man pages for init.d, edited the skeleton file for sshd, and got all the ssh files in the correct places, other than the links in the rc.d directories. Now I just need a little help tying it altogether, mainly with the rc.config file. There isn't already a line in my rc.config to START_SSHD, and I'm wondering if I can just add that in myself manually or through YaST. I didn't see how in YaST to add something that isn't already present. So, can I just edit the rc.config with START_SSHD, then run SuSEconfig and be ok or am I missing something somewhere? Looking for consensus, I can marginally agree with your third reason, not with the first two. 1) I know that static compiled programs are bigger but they do not fill a hard disk. In order to have more data about this, I tried to compile a few programs with -static (usually I go with the classical configure - make scheme). I did it with three programs I currently use: mc (Midnight Commander), mutt and lyx. While all three compile here without errors dynamically, with -static I got errors in all three. Only mc ignored them and produced an executable, the other two failed. In all cases the errors were related to functions in libintl. For mc the comparison is as follows: dynamic size 675192, static size 919995. This is no big deal, isn't it, no risk of exploding my hard disk. 2) As for the second reason, that's indeed the problem which arises most of the time and I see it in fact as an argument against dynamic linking. See what happens in the above tests, two out of three applications don't compile statically. The error criteria are obviously relaxed for dynamic linking, guess why ? So, maybe there are "other reasons" (no doubt about that since dynamic linking has become the rule : there must be reasons), the ones that you give do not suffice to me, sorry. However, your explanation clearly outlines the problem and clearly shows how difficult it is to live in an open source community with the present approach. The approach you advocate is the Microsoft approach. With due consideration to the fact that companies like SuSE, Redhat, earn their lives on it, I will not say it's bad - simply I don't like... [SLE] Mandrake

At our (austinlug) BYOB (bring your own box) event Saturday, I did three installs of Mandrake 7. It is slik. So slik in fact that I changed my main machine to Drake right away. The installer set up sound, scanner, and ide cdrom burner with absolutly no input from me, aside from telling it I would like to use the cdburner. X, network, and ftape only took minimal input. I guess I am trying to say that I am trading the SuSE list in for a Mandrake one for now. This is and has always been the friendliest and most helpfull list around, and I will miss you all. I will do waht I can to maintain the same decorum on the Mandrake list. I just really do not have the time for two high volume lists. Hi, first than any excuse my poor english. [SLE] SAMBA profiles, how to get them off the server?

Hello! Our lab is working under Win98 as workstations, and SuSE6.2 as server. Samba is configured as SMB domain. In multiuser Win98 mode Windoze everytime stores (and loads) profile to network netlogon directory. How to omit this feature? I want NO profiles on network, but I found no tips in the documentation. [SLE] which binary editor is "best"?

I have a small project (editing lyx files which contain the special characters of East European languages) for which the only valid solution seemes to be using a binary editor. Indeed, while these files contain only ASCII characters, the lyx method of handling such characters - similar to the TeX one, but with a decisive difference - is to insert CR characters in the word. This excludes find-and-replace operations with a more conventional editor. So, I need a binary editor with excellent find-and-replace capabilities.
