[SuSE Linux] rebuilding Perl

Hi all: I want to use SybPerl (a perl module for sybase database programming), but the README indicates several hurdles. For one, I have to rebuild Perl. My questions to the list are 1. Will the new build break anything in my Suse5.3 installation? The purpose of the rebuild is to remove -ldb and -lgdbm from the "link line". 2. What is the best way to do it: get the source RPM and modify that, or get a regular perl distro and install "normally"? Grrrr.... Darn netscape... It craches sa soon it sees a java applet. I know i can turn it off but... or rather it "freezes". Am I the only one ? When is 5 out? [SuSE Linux] Permission Errors from tar Archive

I just tarred my '/' partition to my /opt partition on HDD 0, removed the HDD (HDD 1) it resided on and replaced it with a new HDD 0 containing a bigger '/' space, and untarred the '/' archive to the new partition. The newly installed '/' fs booted up and runs, but not without a small problem: The permissions for some directories and files were not restored correctly. Problem seems to be write access for "others," where it had been set. Example: /dev/null; some files in /var/spool/mail. Why did this happen, or better, what should I have done during 'tar -c' or 'tar -x' to prevent it? Is this a 'umask' problem? [SuSE Linux] Help with setup. Paths?

Hi, I've installed SUSE 6 from the ftp site. Everything seems to work fine. Except for a couple of things. First of all quitting YAST I get some error messages basically: /sbin/ldconfig can't find some files from /usr/i486-linuxaout/lib/ Trying to run make config for the new kernel gives me a similar error message but this time it's /usr/i486-linux/bin/ld I've checked the files exist. Any pointers on what to check? Also when do the new CDs ship. Soon? Will they include the new kernel? Sorry, but English is not my native language. 1)Some months ago, I obtained a copy of the S.u.S.E distribution 5.1 (an evaluation copy)and I want to know how I should configure the electronic mail. The modem is internal and this located in /dev/ttyS2.(I don't have fetchmail, is it necessary ?) 2) When will be available the version 6 of S.u.S.E? 3) The manual that comes with the distribution is on paper or falls upon disk? [SuSE Linux] Kernel compiling: performance issue

Hello If I add many device drivers as modules to the kernel ( for example the cdrom modules ) how will this effect the kernel? My guess would be, that kernel will be slower and larger, do to the over head involved. I have been using an application under Win which was written using Clarion5 for Windows. Is there a method that the source could be converted for use with Linux? The author doesn't want to rewrite in "C".
