If by certified you mean supported, then the answer is no. It may work but it also may fail. I'd strongly suggest to save the home directories (if they're not on a separate partition) and do a fresh install.

Yes, I recommend a backup and new install. I did it the other way and found some annoying bugs or features: it did not go into kde but into twm first use. Then I had troubel with the config files of xinetd, then with nfs. Well you might ask me why updates jeopardize your configs. I do not know ... ;) eventually it is working now ...
