Startkde won't run directly AFAIK. Startx is provided by xinit, so maybe that's what's missing. Startx seems to be a pet hate of Stefan Dirsch, but I wouldn't expect sddm or lightdm to need it.

I did "zypper in kernel-firmware" and rebooted the system. It came up with no X-server started.
I could start the X-server with "X&" but "startkde" still failed. ... https://paste.opensuse.org/12079026
Looks like X is may be OK, but something KDE/Plasma needs is missing. Is either sddm or lightdm installed?
Thank you very much! You made my day. There was no display manager installed at all (no gdm, no kdm, no lightdm, no sddm, no wdm no xdm) "zypper in --no-recommends sddm" installed 20 packages (libXaw7, libXfontcache1, libXmu6, libXpm4, libXt6, sddm, sddm-branding-openSUSE, sddm-theme-openSUSE, sessreg, setxkbmap, xauth, xbitmaps, xconsole, xdm, xinit, xcli, xmessage, xmodmap, xset, xterm-bin). Reboot brings me now to the login screen and i can log into a KDE desktop. Thanks a lot to everybody who spent her/his time helping me.
Do/does ~/.xsession-errors* exist? If yes, what clues are in it/them?
Is the result similar to X& doing
WINDOWMANAGER=startkde startx
???
How about
startx /usr/bin/icewm
IceWM might not be automatically installed any more TW without recommends enabled. It's quite small, so install it if you get command not found. It's a good troubleshooting tool for deciding whether X or Plasma is at the root of X session trouble.
How about clues from output from
journalctl -b | grep -i Failed
Now i will have to check if i got an all german installation or - as it was the case on my first attempt - an english/german mix. I will have to come back here if the latter is still the case.
