[opensuse-project] Ideas for openSUSE Community Week
Hi listmates, There was an "unofficial(?)" meeting about upcoming 'openSUSE Community Week' yesterday. Although most of the details are still WIP and the official announcement about that will be posted later by Micheal or Zonker, I came up with some ideas and would like to show them here. - Countdown banner for openSUSE Comminity Week How about creating a countdown banner for openSUSE Comminity Week as we did for the release of 11.1. http://counter.opensuse.org/11.1/small.en.png I don't know exactly how I can create such a banner, but IIRC, Pascal created the one for the release of 11.1. If we have such a countdown banner, don't you think we can spread the word all over the web with it ? - Community "theme" or "slogan" for 11.2 contest As I posted to -marketing list in past times, how about organizing the contest for 'Community "theme" or "slogan" for 11.2' during the openSUSE Community week ? http://lists.opensuse.org/archive/opensuse-marketing/2009-02/msg00010.html ...Or, should I wait for the official announcement ? These are great ideas. It's never too early to have great ideas :-). We should definitely include marketing initiatives for some of our hackevents. FunkyPenguin also came up with a great idea to organize screencasts for each of the desktop environments. If anyone has ideas, please do add them to http://en.opensuse.org/Hackeek Thanks!

There is one thing I want to confirm. When do you plan to have the openSUSE Community Week ? IIRC, there's no official bulletin on the date yet, but I read somewhere - sorry, I don't remember exactly where - that the openSUSE Community Week will begin at Monday 20th April. Or, isn't the date defined yet ? If my memory is correct and the 'Week' will begin at 20th this month, we don't have that much time left. And, there was a Weekly News Team meeting last Saturday and we discussed what we can do for the 'Week'. http://lists.opensuse.org/archive/opensuse-marketing/2009-04/msg00008.html We set up to make a 'Special Edition' for the 'Week', but, in order to do so, we want all the infos about the 'Week' - especially, when, where and what will be going on, and where we can find the report or archive - to be concentrated in the Wiki page.

@Pascal I remember you worked on preparing counter.o.o for the release of 11.1. http://lists.opensuse.org/archive/opensuse-marketing/2008-10/msg00043.html Can we create a new counter banner or image for the 'Week' and put it somewhere on counter.o.o ?

Although we don't have much time, I think we need some more discussion about this concept. Which list is better to discuss about this hereafter, -project or -marketing ? Can we create a new counter banner or image for the 'Week' and put it somewhere on counter.o.o ?
Mmmmyeah, we could :)
What we'd need to do is:
- - update the three PNGs for the background, which currently contain "11.1"
- - if we want translations, we need to collect them from somewhere
(either this list or poke on opensuse-translation@, they're very helpful
there) -- not sure we absolutely need translations though
I made a first hack (Jimmac made the original background, my inkscape
and designer skills are near 0 ;)):
http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/files/communityweek/
I'm not sure I really like it like that, the upper part is too packed
with text. And I'd also need to do more inkscape hacking for the medium
and small sized ones.
Of course, if our designer hero can come up with something better... :D
(but please with similar bounding boxes, or I have to adapt a lot of
metrics in the script that renders the "n days to go" part)
Not 100% sure about all the translations either, some of them were
translations of "n days until available", which doesn't work for
Community Week.
What text should be shown instead of the "Out now!" that is used for
distro versions ?
Once we're OK with the design, I'll push it on counter.o.o (with updates
every hour).
cheers

I put the image on the top of my User Talk page as a test: http://en.opensuse.org/User_talk:HeliosReds I also found the upper part is too packed with text. I don't have designer skills either, but, why don't you take the plunge and cut the date from upper part like: openSUSE Community Week Then, make bottom part like: 2009.04.20-26 n <- large letter days to go

Certainly. Japanese translation for 11.1 release doesn't work for Community Week. IMHO, English version is just enough for this time, because we don't have so much time to collect translations and I think we should give preference to spreading the word over making multilingualized images.
What text should be shown instead of the "Out now!" that is used for distro versions ?
Although I'm not a native English speaker and don't know they sound good or not, how about: (is) now open ! or (is) running ! And, I think we need to prepare the pattern for 'After the Week' like: is over till next time... ... All those are just my opinions and I hope some other much better proposals would be posted. ;-)
Once we're OK with the design, I'll push it on counter.o.o (with updates every hour).
After that, I hope the image will be shown on somewhere in Welcome page of the Wiki. I kept the translations for those that made sense -- I don't understand all of the languages, but it seemed to fit nevertheless. We can still poke for correctness on the -translations list, should get a quick reply there (and you could already send me a Japanese translation :)).

Maybe
Right
now!
is simple enough.
Well, we still have 10 days to find something for that :)
Some opinions on the current rendering (see URL above) please, and I'll
put it on counter.o.o later today.

Thank you very much :-) and I'm so sorry. :-( Are you on yesterday's project meeting from the opening ? The date of the 'Week' seems to be shifted from April to May.
