[opensuse-project] GSoC 14 has been announced and a set of proposals

Dear All GSoc 2014 has been announced. Cheers to it. We have learnt a lot over the past few months and will like to propose a set of guidelines, please let us know of your opinions 1. If the student is not writing weekly reports and the mentor fails the student, we wont accept the evaluations as PASS or go to Google for reevaluations. 2. GSoC is supposed to be a full time project. If the work is done earlier, it is upto the mentor to decide if he or she will get more work or not. 3. Students must have committed some code / package or some other form of contribution to openSUSE. 4. Students are expeceted to work atleast 4 hours a day (it will usually mean atleast 2 pull requests / commits as a bare minimum per week) 5. Students should be verified by a college professor vouching for him. 6. Hi all, Please note that there are quite some comments on articles like our RC1 release announcement: http://news.opensuse.org/?p=16780 There are questions about things like the nvidia drivers, btrfs, infinality font patches, a note that bluetooth is broken, where is reiserFS and much more. I think it's worth checking out and perhaps answering some of those - many questions I can't answer myself. In general, I do expect all of you to read our news site of course, we work hard to publish 2-3 relevant and quality articles each week. And sharing over facebook, twitter or your social medium of choice is appreciated as well: the more people read what we write, the more it is worth the time. Hi, checking the Board minutes I read: "2.) Devel process The discussion about the devel process document puts the board in a somewhat difficult position. On one hand this is clearly a technical issue and we as the Board should stay out of it. On the other hand those that created the documentation do not appear to take the requested feedback into consideration and appear to be ignoring the feedback provided by the community. However, non of the community members has approached the board directly to escalate the issue, thus it is not obvious if we should take an active approach or not. For now we will monitor this situation and see if any action is needed. As always we are all contributors and should participate in the discussion as factory contributors. Vincent added a box to the wiki indicating this is a draft. " ------------- Timeline[1] * Wednesday Sept 18th: I send a second mail to factory ML asking for feedback * From Sept Wed 18th to Fri 23rd: several contributors provide feedback. * Mon Sept 23rd: Board Meeting. * Tue Sept 24th: Alberto Planas, from the openSUSE Team at SUSE, proposes the first set of changes in the documentation based on the previous feedback. * Tuesday Sept 25th: Alberto Planas communicates the changes made to the documentation. * Sat Oct 5th: The Board publish the minutes from the Meeting held on Sept. 23rd. ------------- In my opinion, this conclusion from the Board: "On the other hand those that created the documentation do not appear to take the requested feedback into consideration and appear to be ignoring the feedback provided by the community. " comes untimely. Waiting some days (around 4 working days) to analyze the feedback, digest it, summarize it and introduce changes in the documentation is nothing extraordinary, specially when the feedback is provided through a ML with several hundred of subscribers and the topic is a complex one. I take the opportunity to encourage everybody to read the documentation[2] and provide feedback through factory ML, supporting the Board call reflected in the minutes. We want to make sure that the documentation describes with a high level of accuracy the current openSUSE development process. Hi, Time flies when you're having fun and we are getting to the time of the year where board elections are in order. We've had a great conference earlier this year and are looking forward to the Summit in November and the impending release of openSUSE 13.1. Between now and the end of the year we'll need to have elections for the board and are happy to announce the Election Committee for this year's election: Izabel Valverde, Harisankar, Thomas Schmidt We would like to thank them for stepping up to form the Election Committee. It is not too late, and if you have an interest in participating in the committee please get a hold of Izabel. That said, the committee will guide the community through this year's election process, work with the candidates to get their platforms posted and eventually tally up the votes and post the results. With this the board will step back from the election process and let the Election Committee proceed. Any questions regarding the elections should be posted to the list and will be answered by the committee. Please support the Election Committee, the candidates, and don't forget to vote during the election period.
