Hi everybody, I have a Mac G4 Cube (Nov 2000) with an Apple LCD Display (connected through the Apple Display Connector) with the following system * SuSE PPC 7.0 * yaboot 0.8.SuSE * a patched XFree86 Version 4.0.2 * 2.4.2 kernel (k_deflt-2.4.2-2.rpm from SuSE) It all works fine, but after a cold boot the systems comes up normally but the monitor remains off. This problem is also common to Open Firmware; in fact cold booting in OF (alt-apple-O-F) gives the same problem: operational OF (blind typing OF commands produces the expected results) but blank monitor. My solution: cold boot in OS 9.1 (which never fails to switch the monitor on) and reboot in Linux (sometimes iterating the process two or more times until I finally get an ON monitor in Linux). (Notes: this is not an X problem, even the text console or the yaboot prompt is invisible; I already have "output screen" in os-chooser.) Any hints on how to solve the problem? Will a firmware upgrade solve the problem? Will the updated firmware be compatible with my system/kernel/yaboot ? A second, related, question. How do I switch off the monitor with a screen-saver? (Using standard DPMS off-mode give raise to a white screen with backlight on) How can I control display brightness? Thanks to all on this list and to SuSE people. S. Dear Jeff, Thanks for prompt reply and detailed explanation. The reason I believed ReiserFS (endian-safe PPC version) had a misconfiguration bug (transaction replay on read-only mounted volume) was simple - after hard MOL crash some files on ReiserFS have been badly damaged (they do existed but contained garbage). So, my conclusion was that transaction replay did not performed correctly. Additionally, reiserfsck invoked imediately after booting clearly stated "Warning: transaction replay on read-only volume". SOLVED MOL Crash (was: ReiserFS + MOL = Crash)

Hi, Finally, I solved really strange problem when MOL crashed if Linux partition formatted as ReiserFS volume. Although main is currently reformatted to ext2, the same problem did exists there, too, for some time. I am 95% sure ReiserFS was not a culprit (I will try ReiserFS/MOL this weekend anyway). The problem actually was that MOL has one of this kind of bug: a) parsing molrc; b) logical evaluation of hardware/configuration info (the most common is a typo like & instead of &&); c) using link to or temp copy of outdated molrc. I found one old copy of molrc in /usr/etc, although this file should be only in /etc. Solution: if you have hard MOL crash, and until this issue will be clarified and solved completely, I recommend manually remove all MOL files from /etc and /usr/lib/mol, and do ONLY MINIMAL changes in molrc. Recent iMac

Hi, I got my iMac at the start of the year (I think, can't remember). Just got Suse 7.1 for PPC. Anything special I need to know? The manual suggests that my hardware may not be compatible due to new firmware?? Any pointers appreciated. Brad

BIG problem with SuSE 7.0 on iMac DV Special Edition

Hi, I installed SuSE 7.0 PPC on an iMac DV Special Edition. Problem is, when I shut down or restart, I get a grey screen and have to re-install EVERYTHING. Other times, I get a folder icon with a face like it's looking for MacOS. I WANT LINUX!!! :-) Someone told me the bootloader is bad. Is this fixable, and if so how? nautilus produces CD drive error

Following up from my recent posts concerning trouble mounting data CDs, I can confirm that the problem is with Nautilus. As I mentioned before, a CD would mount, but then the second and successive CDs would not mount and produce the error: Mount: wrong medium type I have to reboot to correct things. This evening, I have been running without Nautilus and have been mounting and unmounting CDs without any problems. Once I ran Nautilus, the error was immediately reproduceable. Shutting down almost every running process did not cure the problem and a reboot was necessary. [suse-ppc] kmail error

After the update to KDE2.1.1 on my SuSE7.1 I cannot open kmail anymore. I get the following error message: kmail: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXft.so.1: R_PPC_R EL14 relocation at 0x30056d38 out of range Reinstalling xshared-4.0.2-18, kdenetwork-2.0.1-15 and kdenetwork-2.1.1-35.rpm had no effect! Any ideas what's wrong and how to fix it? Thanks in advance, Micha

Voodoo 3 on a Beige g3

Hello everyone I'm having some problems getting my Voodoo3 card to work in XFree86, version 4.0.2 (the one that is installed with 7.1). I'm using a fresh install so I haven't had the chance to mess anything up yet (at least I don¹t think I have ;). Anyway, here's my current setup (at the things I think are important in the matter): - Beige g3@266Mhz - Built-in ATI Rage Pro video card, based on the Mach64 chipset. (not used at all) - Voodoo 3 3000 PCI (16mb video memory) used as the primary card When I installed SuSE I picked the 2.2.18 from the list of kernels, the one with 3dfx support. I also picked the "tdfx" driver when I configured X using SaX2, yet when I try to start X with "startx", it fails, with the following errors recorded in my X86Free log-file: http://www.student.hig.se/~nd00ndn/XFree86_0.log And here's a copy of my X86Config file: http://www.student.hig.se/~nd00ndn/XF86Config.current I'm not sure if what info I should link to, other then this, so I hope its enough to solve the problem :/ I would really appreciate it if someone here, who has knowledge of this could help me out, since I'm dying to get my Voodoo3 to work... Question on Power Mac 6100/60

I bought a 6100/60 for a few bucks and wanted to try to get familiar with a Mac. I have not had much success getting anything useful or worthwhile to run so I thought I might entertain the idea of running PPC SUSE Linux. Can I do that? What should I be aware of? Just looking for ideas. TIA
