Re: [suse-multimedia-e] NVIDIA driver problem

Interesting - I've upgraded to the 6629 driver on several linux systems (all suse pro 9.2) and never patched any of them. The thread you referenced seems to indicate that there is a problem running windows games under wine, without the patches, which would explain why I had no problems:
Follow the thread a little further and you'll see that it is not related to cedega alone. In fact it affects ut2004 for example.
I run only native linux games (ut2004, quake 3, doom3 etc)
Me too, mostly. I still enjoy fallout 2 and baldur's gate under wine, though. Cheers
Best Regards,
Joe

How is the performance compared to native linux games? If there is a noticable lag I wouldn't like it. I'm curious, since my windows-using friends at work are telling me I simply have to check out half-life. Best Regards, Joe

Well, the old games are usually not performance bound in modern machines, i.e., when they work, they work well (for the small sample of games I actually play).

Somehow I never manage to get HL working under wine (I must be the only linux user that couldn't do it), but I hear it works pretty well. I used to play it under windows, and it was a pretty solid game, indeed. It may be a little dated by now, though. Cheers
Best Regards,
Joe

IIRC they were raving about half life 2 - isn't that a bit more recent? Joe

Joe My son is a gamer, when he was here at Xmas he bought Half Life 2 and played it on my 9.2 box using Cedega from Transgaming, which is a commercial version of Wine optimised for Widows games. Details here www.transgaming.com
It costs GPP 8.00 for three months subscription. I have a GeForce FX 8200, he was quite happy with the performance. Mike
