Morgan, Yes, I did read page 27-32. I got this documentation (ucs.ps) from the net (it's available as languages.ps.gz every where), I had it before you told me to refer it. Here in my institute I am still using Suse 8.0. I didn't want to upgrade at this crucial time of my last months of my research works, because I learned from those who upgraded already have big problem with the new compiler. Our microelectronics device simulator is not compatible with 9.0's C/C++ compiler. We have all the Suse versions in our server and this particular package is not inside 8.0 at all. I found "latex-ucs-20020510-39.noarch.rpm" package inside 8.1 or I can also get one from 8.2 or 9.0. Do these packages work with 8.0? Will three be any conflict with the "ifntethi-1.2-324.noarch.rpm" i installed last time? Or otherwise is there any where on the net may be distributed later for 8.0? I have already installed all mule-ucs* staff yesterday which are available in 8.0. Amaharic (Ethiopic) in Latex,

Hi, Can any one help me on how to write an Amaharic (Ethiopic) single word in Latex, Emacs, Suse. I have already installed the ifntethi package released from Suse for my version (i.e. Ethiopic (Unicode): ethio16f-uni.bdf and ethio24f-uni.bdf). I could also display the fonts using Emacs for HELLO file which can be viewed (M-x view-hello-file RET). I read the documentation of the latex-ucs package which mentions about Amharic, ucs.ps (Page 27), but was not clear at all. Would you please give me some tips on how can I insert a latex comand in side my english (German) manuscript using UTF-8 as input encoding or what ever? How and what package I should include and one example for any other language than Latin, preferably Amharic?? Thank you in advance. Cordially,

Linux 2 users - 2 different languages environment

Hi, I installed my last sue 9.0 in french. I also installed all the chinese related packages. I created 2 users. I want to have one in french and the other in chinese. When I change the language in chinese for one user the other one becomes also in chinese. Just the root stay in french. Hox can I do to have a user (me) in french and the other (my wife) in chinese ? jpilot (from SuSE-9.0) does not show Korean characters properly

Neither the updated jpilot-0.99.6-65 nor its prior version which came with SuSE-9.0 works on foreign characters, At least on Korean characters. What about your language other than English? Thanks. Hugh

Where is Mike Fabian?

It looks like Mike Fabian left SuSE. There is no posting by him any more. Along with his departure, the intenationalization project within SuSE seems to be in virtual halt. Something that worked with SuSE-8,2 iclucing jpilot for Asian languages does not work any more with SuSE-9.0. Reflecting current statuts of Linux, you will see not many Japanese or Koreans are posting to this email list. Except me (I am a Korean), they are mostly foreigners who are forced to use those languages. It is a sad status of computing in Asia which rely on MS for everything about electronic transaction. Input problem

I have installed from SuSE V9 on my Laptop. If I try to u se canna to write japanes, I can enter into the japanes mode but there is no conversion to kanji (just hiragana in gvim e.g.). I did: LANG=ja_JP kinput2 -xim -kinput -canna & (the a message appears which I cannot read: €«€ÊŽÁ»úÊÑŽ¹¥µ¡Œ¥Ð€ÈÄÌ¿®€Ç€€Þ€»€ó ts Warning: XimpProtocol: SelectionClear event received neWarning: KinputProtocol: SelectionClear event received ) If I then start gvim with LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2" gvim I can go to Japanes mode (shift-space) but not to kanji input with the space-key (messages telle that something is not available). SuSE9.0 and SCIM - A few problems

Hello, I had really looked forward to SuSE9.0 + SCIM as I hoped that finally I would get useable Chinese input working under Chinese. SCIM installed fine, of course, from the DVD. However SuSE doesn't include the all important 'smart chinese input method' (because of licensing issues I guess). I went to turbolinux to download this but discovered a new version has been released which requires a higher version of scim than is included in SuSE. I removed scim that was included with SuSE then downloaded and installed the following rpms: scim-0.8.2-1ul1.i386.rpm scim-tables-zh-0.3.0-1.noarch.rpm scim-chinese-0.2.6-1ul1.i386.rpm Everything went without a hitch except that after installation there was a message that there is no /opt/gnome2/bin/gconftool-2 I found a gconftool-2 in /opt/gnome/bin/ and created a symlink to the desired location. I then tried to start scim from a normal terminal. The output was fine until it says Starting SCIM..... <and then a paignful pause before> scim::FrontEnd: X11 --failed to initialize XIM server! I've tried verious combinations of rpms such as not using the all-in-one rpm and installing each part individually, all with the same result. Does anyone have this working? Any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong Mike? TIA, Jethro
