[opensuse-kde] The KDE Desktop is looking for maintainers (or not.....)
Dear List mates, Some time ago it was announced that each devel project should have a number of maintainers that are doing the work and supporting each other. I would like to raise the issue that the KDE repositories (KDF and KR49) are currently being maintained by a lower number of people than was indicated. In other words, lately most of the packaging work and supporting KDF/KR49 was done just by me. Looking forward than I won't be able to spend that much time anymore on supporting KDE within openSUSE and therefore I would like to call for volunteers that would like to support the KDE desktop within openSUSE and doing the packaging, bugfixing, etc. The future of the KDE desktop within openSUSE depends on your support and it would be ashame to see the KDE desktop disappearing due to lack of maintainership. In my heart I know that the KDE community within openSUSE is big and definitely capable of keeping the KDE desktop alive. If you do not feel experienced enough to take this task upon you, then be asured that there are experienced people willing to help and guide you. Let's make KDE the best desktop within openSUSE Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Since KR49 was actively maintained, I wonder what happend when packaging moved to KDF instead of KR49? Is it a matter of people not knowing who does what and what help is needed? I use KR49 and the webgui for OBS. Thus I cannot do anything related to updating links. I tried to update packages like calligra in the past but uploading such large tarballs is a pain with my internet connection. And the webgui does still not support to download tarballs and use them as proper source, i.e. they are not listed as file but service… in the sources section. Hence those submits are declined. I also wondered. I know that original KR49 maintainers could not make it when 4.9.2 was released, so I did this together with an alignmed clean-up of KR49. But things were discussed during the initial team meeting and I thought everything was fine and understood.

There is also another option that people are not interested or afraid to help.

Yes, unfortunately. Thanks Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

What about setting-up tasks such as: - uploading tarballs for KDE SC - fixing packages kdebase*+kdelibs+kdepimlibs - fixing packages kdex + kde y - maintaining calligra (uploading + fixing) - maintaining app x, appy, app z That way people can take over a job and would know what to do and when to do it. In case they do not have enough time, they post to opensuse-kde and somebody else takes over. Of course everybody can submit SRs or help with the tasks. I think this is a good idea and definitely worth following up on. Would it be possible for you to create a wikipage where we can collect the tasks that we currently see ? People can than have a look at this page and indicating where they are able to help out. I started a page which outlines the idea. Please add and complete. http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:KDE_packaging_tasks Discussion on the page should happen here though. Discussion on the page should happen here though.
There is wiki page for discussion, not well suited for large threaded discussions, but still closer to discussion object then some thread, on some mail list that even we will have hard time to find after, say, one month. http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE_talk:KDE_packaging_tasks When you read http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:KDE_packaging_tasks click on "Discussion", and you will be on that discussion page. Much easier then to find thread and post to it, specially if you wasn't subscribed to the list before thread was created. To follow page automatically, just click link "Watch" and check your watched pages from time to time, or add Atom feed of that page "My Watchlist" to your feed reader. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

This not some mailinglist but the KDE mailinglist. Post the archive link to this thread in the wiki and you are done.

IMHO your concerns seem a bit far fetched. Packagers are on this list, not on the wiki. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Right, that is the plan. Give link to archive if that was discussed before, but don't expect people to join a thread if they weren't subscribed before . It is possible, but not everyone has capabilities to do that. (Download archives and incorporate in a mailer.)

No. Our wiki server setup does not allow use of such access, but on the other hand we have single login to all services, so if you used any of services before, you can login in the wiki. Maybe having some threads on chit chat forum can help, as anyone able to post on forums can add to wiki without much effort. Also, if you guys think that adding something like button on http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:KDE_packaging_tasks that will call for a questions, or comments, can help more, that is possible and not much of effort for me. See http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GCI_tasks for examples. There was used "Add task" button and somewhat more complicated page structure then it is needed to add comment to the talk page. The name on the button is custom, so it can be any text we like. Also, I played some time ago with mail links in the wiki, and one can add Subject to the link. It will not automatically join an existing thread, but it will make easy to filter all messages with a same Subject.

We need more people willing to take on packaging. That was a reason to create openSUSE:KDE_packaging_tasks, and lowering barriers further can only help. People must be able to contact us without fuss, and talk (discussion) page is one of the ways to do that. Adding links to that page from OBS will make one more place where people can read that they are welcome. Nothing works better then answer to your question from live person, when you finally find courage to post something, even so small as a question. It worked with me and dozens of other people, and it will work again.

Hi Raymond, thanks for the work so far. As I have already contributed in the past (via SR), and also happen to have access to the KDE git, I offer to put me on the maintainers list.

Are there any other good desktops? SCNR, Stefan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

What a coincidence! Since you are the author of https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/107099/ and it got the "Ship it!", are you going to submit it upstream? Currently we have the policy that patches to KDF should have been committed upstream already. If KDEPIM 4.8 is affected as well does the patch apply to KDEPIM 4.8.5, i.e. openSUSE 12.2.
