Just wondering if you updated the kernel. This is the first post of this thread that I read so if I'm off base I apologize. There has been much talk about problems with the kernel that shipped with 8.1. Or problems of how the kernel interacts with hardware that may have some problems. Try updating your kernel through YOU or apt. Plus there was a security vulnerability a few days / weeks ago, so it won't hurt to do it anyway.
Sorry forgot to add if you do update your kernel run mk_initrd just to be safe. Also if you use lilo you have to rerun lilo. I use grub so I forget how to have lilo run. Also to be safe I usually go into yast > system > bootloader config > and have grub rewrite itself. But I've been told this is unnecessary, because grub can cope with an updated kernel. I have also been told that most kernel updates run mk_initrd themselves but I'd rather be paranoid then have to rescue my system. Just thought I'd mention it.
