Dear list, This seems to me that this is a big problem, because I still haven't got any solution from this list. No I did not install the new XFree86, I still use XFree86 4.2. I found out that my problem was with libart_lgpl, so I downloaded the new version from the SuSe site. Then I put it on a floppy, but when I wanted to install the rpm on my pc it did work. I tryed it first with yast, but nothing happen't. Then i tryed it with rpm, but still no luck. I get an error messages that sayes: error: cannot open file libart_lgpl.rpm: Unknown file or directory. SuSe Linux 8.0 Pro KDE 3.1 Any ideas ? Please help ? Greetings, Walter Kerkhofs
Dear list,
This seems to me that this is a big problem, because I still haven't got any solution from this list.
No I did not install the new XFree86, I still use XFree86 4.2.
I found out that my problem was with libart_lgpl, so I downloaded the new version from the SuSe site. Then I put it on a floppy, but when I wanted to install the rpm on my pc it did work.
correction: it did not work.
I tryed it first with yast, but nothing happen't.
Then i tryed it with rpm, but still no luck.
I get an error messages that sayes:
error: cannot open file libart_lgpl.rpm: Unknown file or directory.
What I want to say is this, that after I have mounted the floppy yast or rpm could not install libart_lgpl. So it is not installed on the pc.

Any ideas ?
Please help ?

could you please make a whole documentation of what you did? An example of what this could look like:
mount /dev/fd0 cd /media/floppy ls -l -rw-r--r-- 1 user group 64884 Feb 18 13:04 libart_lgpl-2.3.10-75.i586.rpm rpm -ivh libart_lgpl.rpm (exact copy of error messages etc

Greets, Daniel Hello Daniel, Thanks for responding, here is what you asked for. mount /media/floppy yast -i /media/floppy/libart_lgpl.rpm Nothing happens, so I try it with rpm. mount /media/floppy rpm -ivh libart_lgpl.rpm error: cannot open file libart_lgpl.rpm: Onbekend bestand of map. mount /media/floppy rpm -ivh /media/floppy/libart_lgpl.rpm error: cannot open file /media/floppy/libart_lgpl.rpm: Onbekend bestand of map. mount /media/floppy rpm -Uvh /media/floppy/libart_lgpl.rpm error: cannot open file /media/floppy/libart_lgpl.rpm: Onbekend bestand of map. This is all I did but no luck. :o( I will be very happy when this is solved. Greeting, Walter
Sorry, I don't understand the language of the output. Can you make this first:
unset LANG ?
Can you make ls -l, as I told you? Daniel Am Freitag, 14. März 2003 17:02 schrieb Herman Kerkhofs:

Hello Daniel,
Thanks for responding, here is what you asked for.
mount /media/floppy yast -i /media/floppy/libart_lgpl.rpm
Nothing happens, so I try it with rpm.

Yes. Can you make ls -l, as I told you? Daniel Yes I can. mount /dev/fd0 mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device cd /media/floppy ls -l total 0 d r w x r-x r-x 2 root root 48 Mar 21 2000. d r w x r-x r-x 4 root root 96 Aug 26 2002.. I tryed again with the floppy this time. mount /media/floppy mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device. rpm -ivh /media/floppy/libart_lgpl.rpm error: cannot open file /media/floppy/libart_lgpl.rpm: No such file or directory. I hope this is what you asked me to do, and that you can help me to solve this problem. Greetings, Walter
I assume you know mounting basics and what you want to do with that command. Your kernel sais, that /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device and thus it cannot mount it. Well, as long as you cannot mount your floppy drive, you cannot access any file on it. Your kernel has no such device /dev/fd0, so perhaps the floppy device is disabled in bios or is not or not correctly attached to your mainboard and/or power supply. Perhaps you will check your /var/log/messages for any infos regarding floppy and/or fd0. As soon as the mount succeeds, you will be able to see the contents of your floppy in the mountpoint /media/floppy. Before this, any cd'ing, ls'ing and rpm'ing is senseless. Yes, I know mounting basics as you can see below. mount /media/floppy Altouch this is the first time I did it this way, I always clicked on an icon in KDE. (cd-rom, floppy) It is the first time that I can not mount a floppy, I managed to install an Ogg Vorbis file from floppy. (this file was a Van Halen song :o) Well it does mount, but when I try to install the file the light on the floppydrive coes out. Why this is not possible anymore I don't know, but I find it very strange. Maybe something went wrong during the installation of KDE 3.1, and so my OS is broken. I will look in /var/log/messages as you told me so, and I will let you know what I found. (or not) Greetings, Walter

Untill now I haven't tryed it with a different floppy, but last sunday I did try it. No, it is not a silly question. And i get an error that says the floppy is already mounted, so I think to myself if it is mounted why not try to install the file on it. To my surprice the installation of the file starts, so now libart_lgpl is installed. When I reboot the computer I can for the first time see KDE 3.1, and I like it. :o) Greetings, Walter

Good. Sometimes a broken floppy will cause mount some strange problems. It's often worth checking /var/log/messages for errors if you see something weird like that again -- there might be a message in there saying that there was a problem doing the mount.
And i get an error that says the floppy is already mounted, so I think to myself if it is mounted why not try to install the file on it.
Cool. So I guess your system automounted the floppy for you when you stuck it in the drive. With the old floppy it probably tried and failed.
To my surprice the installation of the file starts, so now libart_lgpl is installed.
When I reboot the computer I can for the first time see KDE 3.1, and I like it. :o)
Glad to hear it. It is very nice, isn't it? Cheers, Matt -- "It's the small gaps between the rain that count, and learning how to live amongst them." -- Jeff Noon

Yes, it is. Thanks to everyone who helped me with this. Greetings, Walter
As KDE is only a program that runs on top of linux, it cannot break system basics in any way. Don't see linux like windows, where the GUI is the OS, here the GUI is running on your OS. If you could mount your floppy before and you have not changed something in your basic system (changing /etc/fstab, changing modules.conf or unattach your floppy drive's data or power cable), there's a fair chance, that your floppy drive went dead. If you have another one from another PC and you know the drive is working, then change the drives to give this a try. But this problem is in no way coherent with KDE or KDE settings.
