Hi Richard For me it looks like your openSUSE-Update Repo has i higher,or the same, Priority than the KDE4 Repo. In this case zypper dup wil downgrade your KDE4 to the Version which is partly in the Update Repo, and this is the Version which was shippt with 11.1, i guess 4.0.x or 4.1.x If you want the latest kde4, you have to set the KDE4 Repo to a higher Priority than the Update Repo, but then you have to be aware that this packages will not be Updated by security Reasons. If you don't care about the Risk set the Priority to a value lower then the Update Repo (a lower value means a higher Priority). For example, if the Update Repo has a Priority from 99, set the KDE Repo to, let's say, 30 or what ever is lower than 99. Then you will get the Packages from that Repo. But if you want SuSE to take care by your Security install openSUSE 11.2 with KDE-4.3.x All Clear ? Yes, because zypper up does not consider packages, where the vendor changes (given that each auxiliary repo is its own vendor).
I've attached the zypper dup output I get. It tells me that kde will be downgraded, but to which version? How do I upgrade to kde-4.3.x?
Hi Richard
For me it looks like your openSUSE-Update Repo has i higher,or the same, Priority than the KDE4 Repo. In this case zypper dup wil downgrade your KDE4 to the Version which is partly in the Update Repo, and this is the Version which was shippt with 11.1, i guess 4.0.x or 4.1.x
If you want the latest kde4, you have to set the KDE4 Repo to a higher Priority than the Update Repo, but then you have to be aware that this packages will not be Updated by security Reasons.
It's fine with zypper to put all repos on the same priority level (e.g. 99). Then zypper dup resolves the packages solely by version, which usually are higher for updates, hence zypper dup does the right thing, which is not always the case, if you're using repos with overlapping names. Always be careful, if zypper dup want to remove packages in flavor of officially updated packages. Security updates for distro KDE is pointless, if you're using another KDE repo, and I guess, that any security fixes of actively maintained project will appear quicker in the auxiliary repos, then in update because the official update process is much slower (organizational wise) then the simple build service check in for the afflicted package. That's more risky because the propability, that something is broken, tends to be higher here. OTOH, maintainers hopefully take "STABLE:" and "UNSTABLE:" labels seriously.
But if you want SuSE to take care by your Security install openSUSE 11.2 with KDE-4.3.x

STABLE is the stuff officially released for latest version of openSUSE (currently 4.3.1, soon to be 4.3.4) + patches (released and unreleased). 43 is the latest bugversion of the 4.3 series. Currently 4.3.4. When STABLE/11.2 gets 4.3.4 too, the 43 repo will become pretty pointless and probably dropped.

Post the output of 'zypper lr -d' too, so we can see your repo configuration. KKFD is the development repo for KDE "next openSUSE". It's waiting to move to KDE 4.4 beta1 shortly. This decision was announced as part of the last meeting minutes.

How about sticking to the official, supported packages if you think it's too much trouble to manage the OBS repos. I'm ok with this, just a big surprise, that it doesn't contain firstly package going to STABLE. Otherwise, how can we pre-test them ? Are them used one days, or we just spend our contributing time for nothing. In a normal process dev, it was supposed ( factory -> stable , but perharps only in my mind :-)

Well sometimes, we need things working, take Networkmanger for example. Until recently, (last few days) to help Will to debug it I need to have some 11.2 normal installation (for checking than upgrades works for normal users). Have one with STABLE to check it was working with it ... But I was working with Factory (that was before 11.2 release date) to try making it working before release. And now other installation with Factory, just to be sure the next release doesn't goes to regression. What could make confusion is the following -> KKFD is the development repo for KDE "next openSUSE" So normally you should only found a build for Factory ( next opensuse ) but there's build for the last 3 opensuse. I agree it's just a mess. :-) Perharps, I've not yet a simple schematic draw of the flow of distribution/repositories/kde release. Factory is for next openSUSE, currently 11.3 STABLE is for "testing"/building patches for current openSUSE - currently 11.2. It's completely logical that 4.3.4 online updates for 11.2 are "tested" in STABLE repo, before they're released. Again, STABLE = official packages+online updates (released and *un*released). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

OK. Thanks to all how already responded, I'm impressed by the swift reactions! But it does not seem possible to get version information, when execution 'zypper dup'?? I'll have a look at my priority settings for the different repo's, for the time being I prefer to stay at OS-11.1. -- Richard

As already said above in the thread change the priority of your update repo to 99 otherwise this will be preferred by zypper dup (which only considers repo priorities as far as I know.)

The most safe way is probably to use 'zypper -v dup -r #KDE_repo' -v will show you the versions if I remember zyppers behaviour in 11.1 correctly and -r will update only to the specified repo. (Note that the other repos are disabled in this case and you may have to install other packages before to be able to perform the update this way.) Addinitional note: In 11.2 you can use --from instead of -r which does not disable all other repos, so the above described problem is solved. Hi Richard, You want zypper to be verbose. You can achieve that using zypper -v dup as explained in Christian's email. Verbosity has 4 levels from -v to -vvvv . ********* As usually more information using zypper help and for each of zypper commands zypper help <command> Also there is detailed manual: man zypper How to use Konqueror to read man and info with benefits of html links is explained in: http://en.opensuse.org/Manual_Pages -- Regards Rajko, openSUSE Wiki Team: http://en.opensuse.org/Wiki_Team People of openSUSE: http://en.opensuse.org/People_of_openSUSE/About -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

From this I saw that my KDE:43 is disabled. I'll see what happens when I enable this one (and when needed I'll increase the priority). -- Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
