[opensuse-kde] KDE 4.0 LiveCD doesn't boot on my PC
The LiveCD with KDE 4.0 boots well on two other PCs, both 32 bit and somewhat older, but the same CD does not boot on my PC. It doesn't even recognize the CD in the DVD drive and show GRUB but just boots from hdd. Any other CDs for installation, eg OpenSUSE 10.3 32bit or OpenSUSE 10.3 AMD64 have no problems to boot on this PC. Here is some info from 'hwinfo --all' with OpenSUSE 10.3-AMD64, as far as the devices are needed to boot from CD: - Board Info: #2 Manufacturer: "Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd." Product: "M55S-S3" - Processor Info: #4 Socket: "Socket M2" Socket Type: 0x04 (ZIF Socket) Socket Status: Populated Type: 0x03 (CPU) Family: 0x1d (Athlon) Manufacturer: "AMD" Version: "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+" Processor ID: 0x178bfbff00040fb2 Status: 0x01 (Enabled) Voltage: 1.4 V - 47: [...] Hardware Class: cdrom Model: "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10N" Vendor: "HL-DT-ST" Device: "DVDRAM GSA-H10N" Revision: "JL12" Driver: "pata_amd", "sr" Driver Modules: "pata_amd" Device File: /dev/sr0 (/dev/sg0) I cannot install the ISO on a virtual system due to lack of hard disk space :-(( I also wanted to file a bug but never received a confirmation mail from Novell bugzilla. Is there a way to boot from the LiveCD or will there be a more compatible one in near future? Cheers, Detlef -- Wise men don't need advice. Fools don't take it. Does the official openSUSE 10.3 Live-CD boot on that PC? Bye, Steve --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Yes, it does (burned it to the same CD-R) however it makes strange noise when reading the content. Also burned the KDE 4.0 LiveCD-iso to another CD-R with the same result, i.e it doesn't boot. (Sorry Stephan, didn't realize that I first answered to your SUSE adress). Cheers Detlef -- Wise men don't need advice. Fools don't take it. Would you, or someone else with an 'unwilling PC', be willing to test a set of different ISOs (way smaller than 512MB of course :-) so we could isolate the configuration change or version update between 10.3 Live and KDE Four Live which causes the breakage? :-) Bye, Steve --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I have a toshiba satellite x205 with brain dead vista that will not boot the kde4 live-cd. It boots the 10.3 live-cd, but doesn't like the nvidia geforce 8700m gt, and will not boot the kde4 live-cd. - -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFHlfKaClSjbQz1U5oRAgBdAJ0Zo0UpjvfcatudsMIhxnRQnZFadgCgjnJ9 n6s3FbbeXtY0pTIClmprVWg= =/Kwf -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Yes, of course. I always like bug hunting. Where are the ISOs? Cheers Detlef -- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/boot-test/ has some ISOs to test. Please test at least the versions labeled 2.05 and 1.64 so that I know that the test is set-up right and that I'm varying the correct component (if the 2.05 one does work or the 1.64 doesn't work then we have to suspect something else being broken/changed since openSUSE 10.3 Live-CD). :-) Bye, Steve PS: Versions <=1.80 are known to not be able to mount the root filesystem but that is not what we want to test, greater ones should boot until a login prompt but you will not be able to login, read the system is unusable. :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Great, looks like really some change of Kiwi between version 1.64 and 2.05 how the CD gets mastered broke it. Any time to try version(s) in-between? Just tested with 1.80 and with boot success on my PC, so the trouble began after that version. I will test 1.99 later today and report to the list. I justed tested version 1.99 which does NOT boot on my PC but is ignored like 2.05. So it seems that a change between 1.80 and 1.99 caused the break. Feel free to ask for further tests. You might also contact me via PM. Good luck in debugging ;-) Detlef --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Still 19 versions and I see nothing obvious (like changed mkisofs parameters) :-(, still eager to continue the game? :-) I uploaded three new ISOs/versions. It comes down to a break between 1.85 and 1.90 now. While version 1.85 does boot on my PC version 1.90 does not. But I will test both CDs tomorrow on another box to make sure both are okay. I will come back after that. Please test at least the versions labeled 2.05 and 1.64 so that I know that the test is set-up right I now also tested both (1.64 and 2.05) with a 5 yo HP laptop and both booted fine.
Maybe it's an issue with the nVidia chipset of my MoBo or the LG DVD drive. Hth, Detlef --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
