The first port is where the AT commands are sent to (basically the same as with the old analog modems). The second port is the data port. In the messages log you posted to the list you see that the modem-manager says data port is ttyUSB0 and nmcli dev ttyUSB0 gsm not connected Thus, at least this port is correctly detected by the modem-manager.
Strangely the stick works now. I am not aware I changed important things. I just deleted the old networkmanager UMTS profile and created it new from scratch. Now the UMTS stick is able to establish a connection. I do not know why it works now, but it does work now. I will keep an eye on it.
