Feature changed by: Andreas Jaeger (a_jaeger) Feature #308459, revision 13 Title: Include Sage open-source mathematics software - Package Wishlist: Unconfirmed + Package Wishlist: Evaluation by engineering manager Priority Requester: Important Requested by: Todd R (theblackcat) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: Sage is a python-based GPL advanced mathematics software similar to the closed-source mathematica and the open-source maxima. It seems pretty powerful, supporting many advanced mathematics operations, plotting, and other higher-level mathematics tasks. It provides a nice web interface. Further, the new Cantor advanced mathematics software that will be included with KDE 4.4 can act as a front-end for sage (as well as maxima and R for now). However, there is no Sage package for openSUSE. Considering an official KDE program now uses it I think it is a good idea to provide a package. Further, it is useful, powerful, open- source tool for people in science, mathematics, and engineering, with a rather nicer interface than wxmaxima (which is available). Since Cantor is now in the main KDE education software group I think Sage should probably be in the main release for openSUSE 11.3. In the meantime there should probably be a package in KDE4 Unstable now and one in KDE 4 Factory when it switches to KDE 4.4 beta 1, and probably another in the science and/or education buildservice repository since it can be used in any web browser independently of KDE. The software can be found here: http://www.sagemath.org/ Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: Cantor and TeXmacs both indeed may be used as SAGEmath frontends rather than its browser interface. For students to learn higher maths, and scientists to benefit from the deep integration of free/open software well choosen among what's available, SAGEmath is the very one project. Discussion: #1: Kevin Coonan (kevinc_md) (2010-03-01 17:01:37) The current Cantor package lacks support for the exceptionally well regarded R statistical analysis and programming backend. I concur with including SAGE. SuSE is a great platform for scientists and engineers, and inclusion of better support for the core tools used accross disciplines is important to the future of SuSE as a leader. #2: Ricardo Gabriel Berlasso (rgbsuse) (2010-03-01 18:42:51) See this: Add more scientific packages (309007) #3: François Godbout (jfg7777) (2010-12-18 06:48:34) Why its developers would not have conceived it to install without all packages together seems to be worked over. The different platforms on which it is ported shouldn't have to be bothered with the developers difficulties to match up with pieces of software upgrade inconsistencies. Some knowledgeable would mainly have to make some RPM with it, as seems to be asked from them. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/308459
