Feature changed by: Saptarshi Das (saptarshi) Feature #307415, revision 5 Title: Back to the old GDM 2.20 branch, the version with gdmsetup openSUSE-11.2: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Important Requested by: Everaldo Canuto (ecanuto) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: The new GDM is ugly and miss lots of features available in previous versions, look at web gdm web site (http://live.gnome.org/GDM) we can see that old branch still maintained: "A rewrite of GDM is underway. On 15 October 2007, the new design replaced the existing SVN.w/ gdm-setup) trunk At the moment, this rewrite provides a functional login program, but is missing some features which are in the last stable (2.20) branch. It would be great if more people could get involved to help complete the rewrite. The existing stable branch will continue to be maintained with bug fixes until the rewrite is ready. Apologies for any inconveniences this causes while we are working on this rewrite." So, why we dont get back to old branch and wait until "rewrite" get done. Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: Because new GDM used in openSUSE 11.1 and openSUSE 11.2 lack lots of features already available in old versions of openSUSE. Also, lots of people what to have gdm-setup back, artists want to make new gdm themes and well, new gdm just sucks and is ugly. Discussion: #1: Saptarshi Das (saptarshi) (2009-10-08 21:30:38) Please bring back the features like "gdm-setup" in the openSuSE 11.2!!!! We, the linux users believe in the phrase: "LINUX = FREEDOM"!!! So, it is quite obvious that we must be able to modify or customize our distros to its optimum level. Hope this things will be kept in mind when we will face the new release! #2: (kamikazow) (2009-10-10 20:00:46) (reply to #1) The feature list for openSUSE is already set in stone. With GNOME 3.0 on the horizon, I don't think that any GNOME 2.x components will even be included in openSUSE 11.3. + #3: Saptarshi Das (saptarshi) (2009-10-20 20:04:43) + Yes, GNOME 3.0 is on the horizon, but as all these things are + constantly developing, I hope there should be some space to move ahead + with the new rewrited code. So, I expect there should be some near + future update which we can just install through gnome repos! :) + Indeed I'm eagerly waiting for the release date of 11.2! + Thanks for your reply! -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/307415
