[opensuse-factory] Different outlook of GTK2 and GTK3 applications
Hi! It seems that in addition to different look of GTK, Qt3, Qt4 applications, in Factory we will face different look of GTK2 and GTK3 apps. Looks like some applications (like Yast and Gnome) are build with GTK3, while others (thunar, xfce) are built with GTK2 which makes them look inconsistently in mixed environment. Some utilities such as nvidia-settings ate GTK2-only. It seems introduction of GTK3 is another step further from desktop unification towards a bazaar of different toolkits. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Hi!
It seems that in addition to different look of GTK, Qt3, Qt4 applications, in Factory we will face different look of GTK2 and GTK3 apps.

It's not a matter of GTK3 but rather due to the fact that noone has created a unified GTK2/3 theme for openSUSE. Even Adwaita is inconsistent since its GTK2 variant is simply Clearlooks. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Ever checked out #GNOME-Shell on Deviantart? They have a openSUSE Sonar theme for both GTK2 and GTK3... -- later daze. :: Robert Xu :: rxu.lincomlinux.org :: protocol.by/rxu -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, Vincent even packaged it, see gtk3-metatheme-sonar in Factory. Unfortunately it is currently unusable. I've contacted the author who said he'd work on it after taking a break first. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

He did an update that seems to work nicely with GTK+ 3.2, but there's no new tarball. Can you maybe request a new tarball? Sure, what update are you referring to though? The last version seems to be from August 28th. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

He came on irc a few days ago, and showed some progress via screenshots. Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Even if such theme exists, how it is supposed to configure GTK3 applications from a non-Gnome3 DE? For example I use KDE3 and other people use OpenBOX, LXDE, Xfce. How we can configure the look of Yast2 GTK3 fronend from non-Gnome3 desktop? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Dynamically via XSETTINGS (which is what xfce4-session/lxsession do), or statically via ${HOME}/.gtkrc-2.0 and ${XDG_CONFIG_HOME}/gtk-3.0/settings.ini if you run a window manager only. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

And how it is supposed to be configured from a non-Gnome3 DE? And what if somebody wants to run GTK3 app under Qt enviromnent? For KDE3 there were qtcurve, gtk-qt-engine and oxygen-gtk. There is neither of them for GTK3. Linux becomes even more variegated with. The Qt-GTK integration even for GTK2 was not finished yet. And now all the efforts are scrapped and all should be started anew. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

No, it is exactly mater of GTK3, since it is a new toolkit. One can create a theme that resembles other toolkits, but this is not a consistent solution (the same problem exists with Qt3/Qt4, Qt4/GTK2 etc). There are no themes for all toolkits and when one more toolkit is added, creating such universal theme becomes even more difficult.
has created a unified GTK2/3 theme for openSUSE. Even Adwaita is inconsistent since its GTK2 variant is simply Clearlooks.
