[opensuse-factory] using firefox over ssh -X
Hi, I experiance a strange and actually very annoying thing: I ssh -X to my other box (openSUSE 10.2) from my Factory box. I'll call the 10.2 install PC, and the Factory NB. So, I ssh -X from the NB to the PC. I can start all sort of X-Applications on PC and have the screen pointing on NB. Exactly what I want to happen. rpm -q MozillaFirefox on PC shows it's version 2.x.x.x installed if in a terminal on PC (connected using ssh -X) I type firefox, as requested, a firefox is showed on my display on NB. BUT: It's the locally installed FF 3.0 from the factory installation on my NB. this is NOT what I want to happen. If I'd want THIS, then I'd NOT ssh to the other box. There IS a reason for me to do so (beyond the scope of this mail). Can you confirm that this is happening? Is this supposed to happen? If yes: Why? If no: already a bug filed or shall I do so? I'm not sure if it's rather a factory issue or a 10.2 issue, or FF in general. I can expand experience to logged from 10.3 --> 10.2 and if there is no local Firefox running all is fine, but if it is running than when I start one over ssh the local copy will show up. Also, try to start first remote, and then local ;-)

I want to run the one that I start. So, the answer is no.

I don't see any reports like this for openSUSE and 'firefox' or 'ssh'. It is your turn.
I'm not sure if it's rather a factory issue or a 10.2 issue, or FF in general.
I would expect that windows started over ssh would be treated different than local windows, ie. isolated from the host system for all programs including firefox, but it seems that it is not. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Then you probably get another window of the remote Firefox. It's actually considered a feature of Firefox that another click on the desktop icon just gives you a new window in the same process you're already running and does not start up another process (which cannot share the same configuration/profile data). If you don't want this behavior, use the -no-remote option that disables this feature of looking for another Firefox process and telling that one by remote to open another window if it's running. BTW, the same is true for all other Mozilla-based applications that run the "new toolkit", i.e. Thunderbird, Sunbird, everything using XULRunner, and SeaMonkey starting with 2.x versions (the latter are not in openSUSE yet, still in pre-alpha stage).
