[opensuse-factory] proposal to drop the greeter for 11.1
Hi.
I'd like to propose dropping the greeter dialog. If it's too late for
11.0, then at least for 11.1. I consider it to be just a nag screen
similar to the welcome page in Windows 95(?) that nobody actually
reads and it just gets in the way.
For more info see bugs #386485 and #386486.

I agree, but I also think part of the issue with the greeter is it
doesn't serve much usefulness anymore. No user is interested in learning
about where Linux came from when they first boot into the desktop.
Pre-10.3, it served one useful purpose: it directed users who bought the
boxed edition to register for technical support, which even then was
useless, on the back of the DVD jewel case it directs you to do the same
thing.
I think that in 11.1 the web browsers should redirect to a start page
with a search engine link, and links to the forums, IRC chat,
mailinglists, etc. That will probably help the users more than the
greeter will.

Are you joking? How can you delivering the artwork way too late (the 11.0 branding in general beyond general deadlines) a reason to drop it!? I think a greeter looks slick... its informative value doesn't matter too much to me :-) Erik.

The proposal to drop the greeter is not related to the lateness of artwork. It won't be dropped for 11.0, it seems, so just consider Jakub's proposal as something to discuss for 11.1 :-) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Maybe not drop it completely. But only stop it from popping up on first run, but leaving it as a desktop icon people can click for some info. Or maybe replace the "functionality" with a useful webbrowser start page instead. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

IMHO this is the best solution. We were already discussing about a start page, AFAIK there was no decision.
