[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed Yast Boot loader no longer provides vga for Plymouth
Hi all, Does anyone know why the "vga" settings were removed from the Tumbleweed Yast Boot loader? Plymouth needs the "vga" settings for initrd otherwise you get the three question marks. Any thoughts before I make a bug report. Cheers! Roman I -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I recommend to make the bug report anyway. -- fr.gr. member openSUSE Freek de Kruijf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Plymouth is taboo here, so I can't check. However, WRT the vttys, if that's what your Plymouth concern is, video= on kernel cmdline equates in effect to what vga= does, except the kernel retains the mode video= declared for framebuffer use, rather than overruling the mode vga= produced. vga= is actually a special switch intended for bootloader use, which non-modesetting kernels just happened to inherit. Since kernels have been modesetting all the way back to around 11.3, vga= really hasn't belonged in YaST bootloader for a very long time. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I talked with Jiri last year and he said that this was another feature he was considering removing from the Yast bootloader.
Why is it that we add these handy features to the Yast bootloader, just to have them removed at a later date. Why not replace the vga drop-down list with a video drop-down list? All that work for not. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I brought it up in https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=675793 five years ago but it never generated any traction. It's odd that kms is not supported for radeon. There's is no answer to why it's not supported.
You would think by now that the we shouldn't have to add a video= entry in the kernel option. It should be auto-detected. My screen gets auto-detected in Plasma 5. However, this doesn't get passed on to the boot splash. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Because it is supported. Why do you think it isn't? Maybe you have one that requires unavailable firmware? I have several radeon cards. All are supported by KMS.

KMS does autodetect EDID provided modes, and selects EDID preferred mode unless directed otherwise, and AFAICT, also autodetects what modes the gfxchip supports. How such autodetection and autoselection interplays or not with Plymouth in openSUSE I don't know, because all openSUSE installations here have Plymouth tabooed.
My screen gets auto-detected in Plasma 5. However, this doesn't get passed on to the boot splash.
Most people don't need video=. Grub2 has an entirely separate and less simple mechanism for configuring itself and what it passes on to what follows. Grub2 needs neither vga= nor video=. AFAICT, it doesn't pass vga=, and even if it does, KMS overrides it. What it does or not with video= I don't know. I don't use Grub2 much, and not at all with openSUSE. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. With what gfxchip, ATI Rage*? Cirrus Logic? Matrox? Trident? Many old gfxchips have no KMS support, so vga= remains useful for them. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." You may have forgotten about one. I've had several 845Gs, and still have two running TW, one a Dell/Foxconn, the other an Intel. Each has a BIOS option to choose between 1MB and 8MB for framebuffer or some such. With 8MB selected, KMS is fully supported. BIOS resets and dead batteries revert the selection to 1MB. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Ah. I'll print this, so that I can remember to try. The machine is my acting server, so I boot it about once a month. It has no battery. Ah, you probably refer to the bios battery, that one is recent. Still... ram is 0.5 GB, not much to spare. Wait. AmonLanc:~ # hwinfo --framebuffer ... Memory Size: 7 MB + 832 kB So the option is already set. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

Wait.
AmonLanc:~ # hwinfo --framebuffer ...

So the option is already set.

Sorry. I only wanted to show that "vga= " is still needed by some. How to replace it in my machine by something else is of no real interest to me, as that was discussed years ago and determined that "vga=…" is the only setting that works here. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. This is a debate because when the community requests features the ideas are added. Then three years or more later they are removed without discussion. That's why.
