[opensuse-factory] Remove libpng12 from Factory
Hi, I would like to ask again, if I can finally remove libpng12 from factory (to not exist in 12.2) in time we might want to slowly go towards libpng15. Thanks for your opinions, Petr

Current LSB standard includes libpng12. So before removing it, wait at least for a new version of LSB. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Disable Chrome and we will have a battalion if not legions of pissed
off users... Chrome is the 2nd most used browser[1]... sounds like a
good reason for not breaking it.

Someone mentioned Skype and up to a few months ago Google Chrome also
required it, I'm not sure if it still does. Also we should consider
that many users use software provided by other vendors which might
depend on it... I think it's maybe too hasty to remove it...

Hasty? libpng14 is nearly two years old. And porting an application to it is trivial in most cases, see "libpng12 removal" thread. Ok, so let's leave libpng12 in factory, but that means no libpng15. Petr

And it's still widely used... I'm sure that removing such a package will increase a lot of value for openSUSE :)

nice attitude for @suse.cz... would you cry a bit if people push a bit more ? :)

Someone want take maintainership of libpng12? I will not maintain three libpng versions in factory, one is pretty enough.
libpng12 is LSB, so just keeping libpng12 and libpng15 will be enough. Let's drop libpng14. And someone has to maintain libpng12 for SLES11 anyway, so just submitting the same fixes to Factory should do. -- Stefan Seyfried "Dispatch war rocket Ajax to bring back his body!" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Dear Petr, I do not see any scenario under which that libpng12 can be removed before oracle and ms decide to move on with their products... I doubt suddenly opensuse users will decide not to use that products... before that it seems there are other opensource projects that still need it. So I advise you to have a constructive attitude and compile a list, ask help, if needed with major used packages that need libpng12 you already have quite few examples on the thread already. That seems to not bet true with openSUSE:Factory/iscan-free as far as I can see.
iscan-free != Iscan iscan-free is only the plain "epkowa" driver and works only for scanners which need only the plain "epkowa" driver but no additional proprietary modules, see "rpm -qi iscan-free" In contrast Iscan from Avasys provides much more, in particular additional proprietary modules and a user frontend which are needed by many models. Currently Iscan from Avasys is needed at least for the following models: # /usr/lib/YaST2/bin/create_scanner_database | grep '^iscan|epkowa|' or see the models which have a "DFSG non-free" comment in http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-external.html#S-EPKOWA Kind Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH -- Maxfeldstrasse 5 -- 90409 Nuernberg -- Germany HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendoerffer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Can't we keep libpng12 just as shared library so that 3rd party software can use it and use libpng15 for compilation of openSUSE 12.2?
