[opensuse-factory] Software management installation summary dialog
Hi folks. Software management hasn´t been using pop-up window "Install more packages?" since 11.1 and it´s automatically closed. It was filed a few bugs( 462352, 440066, 441329, 421660) about this behaviour, but you decided to disable this feature. I still can't get familiar with this behaviour. It's a really annoying, especially if i forget install some packages and i have to launch software management again. I don´t know any mainstream distros, which close their software management after installation. Can you tell me, what is benefit of this behaviour? I still haven´t found any. I talked to Lado Slezak and Katka Machalkova on #yast and they told me, that the installation summary dialog probably won´t be enabled by default and i can use trick how to enable it. But, is any chance that responsible people will change decission and the installation summary dialog will be enabled by default as in the past? -- S pozdravom / Best regards, Rasto -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I think 'summary' would be a subtle 'default': not giving the impression of having crashed in the installation (which is what I always think when the window just disappears) and not asking to do anything else. to change the behaviour, look at /etc/sysconfig/yast2 ## Type: list(close, restart, summary) ## Default: "close" # Set the default behavior of the package manager when package installation has finished. # Possible actions are: # close - just finish the package manager # restart - go back to the package manager, install/remove more packages # summary - display an installation summary dialog, there user can decide whether to finish or restart # The summary dialog is always displayed when an installation error has occurred. PKGMGR_ACTION_AT_EXIT="summary" (just set yast the way you want it.. it's working great (ok: clicking 'back' might be a bit un-intuitive, but works fine). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

to change the behaviour, look at /etc/sysconfig/yast2

Yes, i know about this. But i think common users, won´t know where and how can change this option. And i have experiences that its not usefull also for other users. http://forums.opensuse.org/how-faq-read-only/unreviewed-how-faq/406003-yast-... http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/405853-yast-close-after-update.html http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/404040-install-software-yast-module-... http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/402022-software-management-tool-clos... -- S pozdravom / Best regards, Rasto -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I am also annoyed by that behaviour, for the same reason as anybody else: you mostly want to install some pkgs, but while busy firing up yast, and do the things nessesary to add the pkgs, 'one by one' in the search bar, choose each version or repo seperately, If not written down what has to be entered, and crossed out what is entered, you definately miss one or two... ;( And indeed, instead of patiently waiting until i, the user, decides, to stop or continue, the window closes. I allways was 'boss' of the pkgmngmnt. Now the pkgmngr is! It just does not feel right, and is time robbing, to repat all the steps again. In the early days, the user was king.... But those days are long gone.... unfortunately.. ;) -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (M9.) (Now or never...) Any idea how to improve it? Add an additional check box like [ ] Restart the package manager or change [Back] to [Restart package manager]? (but IMO that's too long for a push button label...) Anyway, the ncurses interface has an additional submenu: Configuration -> Action after Package Installation ... -> [ ] Restart Package Manager [ ] Close Package Manager [x] Show Summary I guess it should be also implemented in the Qt interface... -- Best Regards Ladislav Slezák Yast Developer ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SUSE LINUX, s.r.o. e-mail: lslezak@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 960 190 00 Prague 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Maybe [Install more] would suit better, as also shorter.
Anyway, the ncurses interface has an additional submenu:
Configuration -> Action after Package Installation ... -> [ ] Restart Package Manager
[ ] Close Package Manager [x] Show Summary
I guess it should be also implemented in the Qt interface...
And also the GTK interface. The interfaces should differ from each other by their look (to integrate / apply the desktop standards they are supposed to work on), but not by their features. For the graphical interfaces, where space is less an issue than for curses, there should/could be a drop-down just around the [Apply] button. Imho by default the qt sw_single should show a dialog like "Operation successfully completed. Install or remove more packages? y/n" (with the default being "no", so the user can just hit Enter to get rid of it) Maybe there should be a gui option to disable that dialog, for users who just want the package manager to magically and instantly disappear without warning when it's done. But I think this group of users is a very small minority ;-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
