[opensuse-factory] beta2 cd-kde wants to install on runlevel 3
Just tried to install OS11.0beta2 kde from live-cd on an old PC: 800 mhz Athlon 256 Ram Geforce mx400 the installer suggests to install the new system only in runlevel 3. Is this because of low ram and old graphics or is this a bug? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Most likely it is only a low ram prob. Cann't you add another 256, to see if the message still comes up? -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (Now or never...) Or maybe make (*) / use existing swap partition on the hard disc, once the installer is under way switch to a terminal e.g. Control-Alt-F2 and do "swapon /dev/sda1" or whatever (*) making a swap is well documented elsewhere, but in essence use fdisk to create a partition ~ 2x RAM size & of type 'swap'. Then run "mkswap /dev/sda1" or whatever to prepare it. These steps can also be done at the above stage, though if changing partition structure I'd advise to re-start the installation afterwards. If doing this, ensure partitioning in installer is NOT set to format or delete the swap partition before agreeing to 'Install'... -- Cheers Richard (MQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

not tested. And I found it reported on the suse-pages. I hadn't only been my problem. Shouldn't be solved in b3.

Thanks, I knew this.

Twice the size of RAM was common a rule of thumb a decade or so ago; these days we recommend at most the size of RAM. Wouldn't it rather be a bit over the size of the RAM, to ensure it can hibernate? It's not easy to calculate the space needed for reliable s2disk, it is a guess (till it is actually hibernated each time, of course) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Without wanting to get into a flame war, I'd quite agree that 1x is sensible on 'normal' systems with plenty of RAM. However, we're talking here specifically about a machine sporting 'only' 256M. I do a lot of installations on such low-end kit and would generally use 2x, I also often see (on such systems) swap usage > 50%, which I feel justifies it. -- Cheers Richard (MQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Then you can put as much swap as you want, without the slightest qualm. I have a system with 32 MiB of ram and about a GiB of swap O:-) The 2x size was typical of Windows 3.X because it was simply the maximum it tolerated, more was ignored. So it became the rule of thumb. In Linux there is no such limit. Of course, it will work faster with that much in ram rather than in swap, but when there isn't, there isn't. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Besides that, when hibernating it uses swap for to plant the image. If it is not big enough, it will fail... -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (Now or never...)
