[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed - Review of the week
Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers,
As I did in the last couple weeks, here again quick overview of what
happened last week. It was mostly unspectacular, but I'm sure some of
the updates are greatly wanted:
The probably most interesting updates were:
SAMBA 4.2
With the introduction of Samba, btrfs/snapper are transparently used to
offer shadow copies to Windows users. The users can themselves revert to
previous copies.

VLC 2.2.0
The VideoLAN project released the major update to version 2.2.0 and
after a couple iterations in the devel project, found its way also to

NetworkManager 1.0 (incl plugins)
Several of you already asked for it and it took a bit longer to get it
all ready, but it is now also available in Tumbleweed.

GCC 5.0
So far, GCC 5 has been added to the Tumbleweed repository as additional
compiler. Work to see if this could become the default compiler for the
distribution is still ongoing in its separate staging area

FWIW, the Samba + Btrfs / Snapper integration changes were also shipped with openSUSE 13.2 - they're carried as backports atop the Samba 4.1 codebase. Cheers, David

Note that you'll need an updated AppArmor profile for winbindd - unfortunately I was too busy in the last two weeks, and this week I'm on vacation (with a terrible internet connection). See https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=921098 for details. Workaround: Apply the changes from the bugreport to your winbindd profile, or just switch it to learning mode with "aa-complain winbindd" (and don't forget to switch it back with "aa-enforce winbindd" when the updated package is available ;-) BTW: David, did you see additional things we need to allow in the winbindd profile? Yast team still working on fixing yast2-core for gcc5. It is more tricky for our side, because we currently see two solutions. First one is simplier, but can affect performance, so we need to do performance testing if we can use it. The second one is more effective and actually can speed up a bit yast ( also needs measurement how much ), but it breaks API and ABI, so it is against plan to have same base packages code in SLE-12 and opensuse to have easier maintenance and probably result in ifdefs that keep backward compatibility, which is not nice in long term. So it will need some time from our side. If there is volunteer to do performance testing with new yast2-core, it will help speed up things. Josef
