Hello Is it correct that if I want to use Nvidia for compositing I have to make the drivers and kernel by source. Roelof -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
No... all you need is to compile the nvidia driver provided on their webpage be sure you have these packages installed i | kernel-desktop | Kernel optimized for the desktop | package i | kernel-desktop-base | Kernel optimized for the desktop - base modules | package i | kernel-desktop-devel | Development files necessary for building kernel modules | package i | kernel-devel | Development files needed for building kernel modules | package i | kernel-firmware | Linux kernel firmware files | package i | kernel-source | The Linux Kernel Sources | package plus the gnu compiler once driver downloaded the driver and the missing packages installed... boot in mode 3 and bash the nvidia driver... I am pretty sure somewhere on the wiki there are proper instructions. Alin On Thursday 13 January 2011 16:40:49 Roelof Wobben wrote:

Hello
Is it correct that if I want to use Nvidia for compositing I have to make the drivers and kernel by source.
The easiest for NVidia on Factory is to download the .run file from the NVidia website and install it according their instructions. You will want to have kenrel-desktop-devel installed for it to succeed. (and of course make and gcc). There is no need to build the kernel manually. Oke,

What to do now ?
Do you have the kernel-source package installed? I think it might be in there. Matt -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

No, it's in kernel-<your-flavor>-devel ie: kernel-desktop-devel I am not sure that kernel-sources is still necessary but haven't bothered to test :^). Actually, it's both kernel-devel and kernel-$flavor-devel. kernel-devel has the files necessary for building modules. kernel-$flavor-devel has the per-flavor configuration and symbol information. - -Jeff - -- Jeff Mahoney SUSE Labs -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.16 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with SUSE - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iEYEARECAAYFAk0vSNMACgkQLPWxlyuTD7KEqwCdGy/FMIcPp3DO5oI0TsHRWU7y 17sAn0utAgKhKnakVabI08tVYcA9wrbG =drEl -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes. If you run into something that actually requires kernel-source, please report it.
