[opensuse-factory] imap and mailsync packages
Hello, I would like to issue a delete request against these two. Or is there anybody who wants to take over imap? Petr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Does this mean we do not have any standard imap server nor client anymore? Beside this mailsync has a bugowner with seife@novell.slipkontur.de (aka seife+obs@b1-systems.com). What is wrong with with Stefan? AFAICS there is a copy of (uw-)imap on github with https://github.com/uw-imap/imap to have a new base for developing. This because https://www.washington.edu/imap/ and its FTP mirror is gone. Werner -- "Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool." -- Edward Burr

for me the question would be what a "standard" imap server is. I haven't used "imap" more than 20 years meanwhile but in the past Cyrus and since almost 10 years now Dovecot. I understand that those are a bit more complicated and feature rich but then again I guess Dovecot could be rather easy configured to work out of the box similar to imap if that is a requirement (and if it's not already the case). uw-imap is the reference implementation.
it says: "was the reference" at least at this very moment. And looking at https://imapwiki.org/Specs it feels like it's not much of a reference as of today. In my experience, dovecot does work pretty much "out-of-the-box", apart from needing to generate (or re-generate) identity certs if one wants to use imaps. I've been running it for 10 years + and the only config I've ever needed to do was to tell it what type of local mailstore to use (I use Maildir rather than the default). Petr asked me before writing the suggestion to drop imap. I'm don't mind maintaining mailsync as long as it is not going to be a lot of work. I do not intend touching the uw-imap code with a ten foot pole.

I seem to remember that the original author of uw-imap died a few years ago and guess that nobody else dared touching this code. As mailsync is the only user left of the c-client library, it's just fair to let it not stand in the way of dropping imap ;-) If someone wants to take over imap (it has no bugowner right now...), then mailsync may of course stay. When alive, Mark Crispin would say that the other implementations were doing it wrong, not following the RFCs :-p

Well, uw-imap was the reference imap implementation. Apparently Marc Crispin wrote the RFC, and implemented it to the letter. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. That's easy to say for authors of RFCs when they leave certain critical things unspecified in RFCs such that clients have to tread on paths of custom behavior. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I thought about importing some of the patches there.. but then I remembered that I want to keep my scarce remaining sanity :-) Probably the one that switches to the openSSL builtin certificate validation needs to be applied, I would bet the one provided by c-client is broken in one way or another. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
