After some reflection on the above, I'm of the opinion that this is the behavior of better widescreen displays in their support of non-widescreen modes, which is to say aspect preserving, rather than stretching 4:3 and 5:4 modes to fill the output area. IOW, your screenshots are exactly to be expected
Even in the aspect-preserving case, there should be black bands in at most one direction pair (above-below OR left-right), but the 80% picture shows a picture that has not been stretch at all.
