I agree. Many users are content with the initially distributed drivers, and do not need updates if the printers keep working. Only when a user finds his printer does not work, partially or completely, he has a reason to find an update. Forcing that update on all users, via YOU, might break other printers that are currently working fine. Thus the current situation, update via repo when need, is best, in this case, and in many.
