Limitations of grub-legacy are a real PITA. Some (btrfs, encrypted boot) were solved by grub2.
Obviously grub2 isn't the holy grail and things like EFI pose additional challenges
It would be advisable to spend more time on getting grub2 fully acceptable, instead of spending time on controversial packages. ;-)
