In theory, journal might still be faster because you don't have to grep through the text but can just select the entries you are interested in by unit, tag, whatever it is called.
So I thought, yes. It is supposed to be indexed and compressed. Maybe it is just a file of variable/fixed length records, in chronological order, with a header on each record that contains those data such as unit, tag, etc. And no index file for fast access.
In practice, of course, my observations do not support that theory :-)
