In fact, some of us need an NFS with some features of ssh.
sshfs?
NFS over a vpn?
Neither :-) NFS, with NFS ports and protocols, but with encrypted logon and traffic, plus user translation, or, user-by-name and not user-by-uid, to be able to connect machines where the user tables are different. It is a real hassle to modify the password files to get matching IDs, then recursively change the ownerships of all files and directories to match the new IDs, because this was not thought in advance. It would be interesting to allow connection of a certain machine, but only to some users, or via password or something. AFAIK, NFS 3 does not have authentication. You just connect if you have the right IP. An intruder to the building, or a visitor, could connect a new machine and get access to the NFS shares. I recogn that I have not looked carefully at NFS 4 features to find out what has changed there, though. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)
