Yes, it was you. You installed a broken libc, if I read the OP correctly. Broken by you by not building it to openSuse specs. Distros don't promise any kind of binary compatibility, not to upstream and not to other distros, except on LSB components, and, IIRC, there's a separate libc for LSB.
Nah, scratch that. LSB packages require the same glibc of all other packages. And I have installed a small amount of LSB RPMs that work just fine, so it works indeed. I seemed to remember some alternative glibc package, but it must have been something else, or maybe for older releases (since everything's mixed up in my mind from 8.0 up till today).
